I don't watch it but I have to say having two actors having a "live" debate is pretty silly if you ask me. What is the point? Is one supposed to believe that they aren't working from a script?
I really enjoyed it. If they did a debate like the real candidates do it would have been boring. I thought they were excellent, Alan Alda was great. It would be nice to just once hear a politician tell you what they are really thinking.
I wouldn't say I enjoyed it because it was a bunch of political talk that I don't find interesting in the least. But, I think both actors did a really good job. Come on, how sweet would it be if a real Presidential candidate looked like Jimmy Smits.
It was so weird. Tonight I got a phone call to do a survey and they asked questions about the very same things on the debate. (The phone all came first.) It actually made me notice and pay attention to what they were talking about. Normally I dont have any clue about politics.
They were working from a script with freedom to ad lib.
I thought it was great. DH and I were both struck by how much better a live actor Alda is than Smits. I guess he's done a lot of stage work, and it really showed. I'm not saying Smits was bad, but he did clearly say the wrong word a couple times.
The idea was to show a "real" debate of the issues...not the garbage that we usually get from real politicans. Although I can see how some people would find it boring, it was great to hear some of the issues aggressively and intelligently debated. They did what the public wanted to see in the last election.
I loved it! I thought some of their ideas were really interesting - even though I'm pretty sure no candidate would ever really suggest some of the things they talked about. I would vote for either one of these guys!
Both my DH and I said we would willingly vote for either of these guys rather than the real choices we've had lately. I agree that Alda's stage background gave him the edge in his delivery over Smits. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was very creative TV.
I do agree that while Jimmy Smits is a good actor, Alan Alda was a superior actor in this setting. However, I felt that Jimmy Smits character had more substance on the issues.
At first I thought it was boring too, but Alda's acting made it very engaging for me, and I also wished that real debates (and candidates) could be like this! Regardless of whether people found it interesting or boring, I think one of the great things coming out of that episode is that people are talking about it, and also talking about real-life political issues.
I wasn't too impressed until they started debating the Mexican border. The two different outlooks to solving the problems that came up in the debate were very interesting. They suggested solutions to problems that I would like to see happen and some that I had not thought of before but I thought would be excellent if actually put into action. I only wish our politicians would watch the show!!
