I agree with you...it did seem weird not watching it yesterday...but I saw a story about why it's never on Sunday and it made sense...
Here's another article about it:
Rose Parade And Rose Bowl 'Never On Sunday'
(AP) PASADENA, Calif. The 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade will not be held on New Years Day due to its Never on Sunday policy as of 1893.
Officials in 1893 decided to move the parade to the next day, Monday, January 2nd, to avoid frightening horses tethered outside of Pasadena churches and interfering with worship services.
The policy has raised questions to Tournament of Roses officials if it has a special pact with a friend upstairs to keep it from raining on New Years Day. It has only rained nine times in Rose Parade History; the most recent being 1955.
The Rose Bowl football game is also never played on Sunday. This upcoming years game will be played on Wednesday because it is the Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game and must be played after all the other bowl games.
New Years Day will next fall on a Sunday in 2012.
