Anyone Use Hotwire for Car Rental?

I have to go to Detroit for some personal business and I am only getting reimbursed $24/day for a car rental. I did get a nice rate with Hertz for an Intermediate and I only have to pay a few dollars out of my own pocket.

I'm pretty much hate driving in general and more specifically driving around a large city and the possibility of snowy icy weather is even worse. I drive an AWD at home and I'd prefer a SUV to rent. I'm pretty much priced-out unless I want to fork out my own cash, which I don't want to do since this isn't exactly a pleasure trip. Hotwire is advertising a rate slightly more than what I'm paying for the intermediate. Has anyone had any experience with renting cars with them? I've read a lot of hotel horror stories, but I don't see much about car rentals. The positive thing is that it does say that they will refund your money if your flight is cancelled, which Priceline will not. Any experiences?

My other option would be just sticking with the Hertz rental and seeing if I could possibly ask for a Subaru Imprezza. I guess they rent those as Intermediate cars.

I've used them alot for cars in the past. But more recently costco has been way cheaper to book through.

Not sure when you're coming our way, but this is a MILD winter. We've had very little snow or ice even. In fact I think we're in the 40's again this weekend :(

Going to Detroit right in the middle of February. That's good to hear that there hasn't been too much. I will probably be fine with the car; we had a Toyota Corolla rental when we were in Miami and it was really quite roomy and maneuverable. The only city I've ever driven in was in Minneapolis and that was years ago before my vision was damaged in a car accident so I'm a little apprehensive. The good thing is that I've been to Detroit many times (not in winter though!) since my bf grew up there and I'm familiar with where I need to go.

Looked at the Costco rates! They are fantastic. My b/f's parents offered to get us a membership when we were in Cali, but the closest Costco is 3 1/2 hours away on a good day and we just use their membership if we get something on-line. I'm going to point out this major savings to the bf and we may very well take them up on their offer the next time around.
