Hi,
Does anyone have any experience using Ancestory.com? I see that they charge monthly fees starting at $12.95 per month. I'm not sure if the membership is worth the money... will I get my "money's worth"?

Does Ancestory.com truly provide accurate and in-debth information regarding family history, or does it lead the subscriber on a paper (internet) chase?! :confused3

Thanks for any help you can provide!

See if your local library has it. We have it at our library--for free!!! You just have to use it at the library. I love ancestry. It's really got a lot of information--but worth the price? Not if you can get it at the library for free!!!!

I have a subscription to Ancestry - Complete US 19.95 a month

I love it - but I have to say my main hobby is genealogy and I log in to Ancestry almost every day. (And many others places :rolleyes1 )

As PP mentioned, most library's do have it for free in their Main Branches - most of the time in the local history room or area. Some also have Genealogy.com. Most library's also have "Heritage Quest Online" - which you usually can access from home with your library card barcode- lots of info, including census, rev war, books, periodicals.....

As far as your question. You will learn as much about your family, as you are willing to work at it. Ancestry.com is a tool that is as good as it's user. A useful tool on the site, is after you create your personal tree (I don't think the free version at the library allows this) The tree will contain "hints" or information for you to look at and compare. Possibly allowing you to expand your tree further. When I was first starting out seriously, this helped me A LOT.

So to answer your question - if you are very casual at genealogy, I would suggest staying within the free resources - there are a lot of them. Or try a month at Ancestry. You will know quickly if it is worth it to you.
