Has anyone been upgraded at the last minute over the past couple of weeks?
I've noticed that the sailing on 31 Aug. still has some empty cabins in cat 4

I have read many posts of upgrades upon check-in. Maybe there is a chance!

We are sailing on the Magic in October and many cabins seem to be available still. I was wondering if they automatically upgrade until the "more expensive" cabins are filled OR only upgrade if they need the "cheaper" level cabins for last minute passengers?

we received our call last week, as did several others on our cruise, that we were being upgraded two cats, 6-4. 2 weeks and 2 days before we sail.

I wonder if anyone ever gets upgraded when they book on points...I am keeping my fingers crossed for our 9/22 sailing!!

We were upgraded at check in on Aug 22 - from cat 5 to cat 4!

Are upgrades just as likely if you had a cabin number already assigned, as compared to having a guaranteed category?

We had a room # from when we made our reservations in March. We were upgraded at check in.

Wow, you were up there with the Big Cats! How cool! I could live with an upgrade.
How are people chosen for upgrades? By time of reservation?

Didn't want them to change their minds! ;)

Do they ever upgrade form Category 5 to category 3? Or do they only upgrade the highest to a category 4?

Just curious, as I am in a cat. 5, bring on the 3. OK if a 4 is the highest I'll take it. LOL

Oh! I hope that happens to us. We are sail on the Magic 1/25, the day before Super Bowl Sunday. I keep hoping if the ship isn't filling up we will get upgraded.:bounce: :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

PiperG...Why they upgrade you when the ship isn't totally full just to be nice? I thought it was when they fill up there lower categories they up you so they can sell the cheaper ones.
Or is there no rhyme or reason to it.

Booked an Inside Cat 11 or 12 for their Honeymoon, due to affordability. When they got to the Port he said DCL took them into a room and sat them down........He thought they were in trouble. They upgraded them to a Cat 6, they were told, because it was their honeymoon.

What a way to start your Marriage.............

Patty...Oh how nice that was of DCL to do that, and to take them aside and tell them it was because of their honeymoon.:)

Hello Everyone,

We are sailing on the Magic Nov 9th. For affordability we chose a category 11 stateroom figuring we probably wouldn't spend that much of our time in it anyways (being our first cruise ever ). I was wondering do they ever upgrade the lower categories? It seems that everyone posting was in a cat 5 or 6 and then got bumped to a higher category. Should I be asking my travel agent to call every so often to see about a free up-grade or do they only happen once you arrive at port to embark?

Also we are on deck 6 right now, but if there is an upgrade to a higher category on a lower deck ( say 1 or 2 ) should we take it. I'm worried you will hear the engine noise and feel the movement of the ship more on a lower deck?

Thanks everyone and have a wonderful Labour Day,

Marty Jay

Um, yea, THAT'S it ... this is our honeymoon (well, this trip is a heck of a lot bigger than our honeymoon trip was... ) But how would DCL know that it's anyones honeymoon trip, anyway?

Oh yeah........I can see it now.........An entire boatful of HONEYMOONERS!!! :smooth:

As a Part-time agent......When someone tells me that it is their honeymoon, anniversary, birthday etc........ (I always ask if there are special occassions) than I pass it onto the Cruise Line or Tour Company. Many Land/Tour companies offer automatic upgrades for honeymooners or Anniversaries if the upgrade room is available.

Patty,

Does your anniversary have to fall in the time period of your cruise? LOL

Often when occupancy is low hotels and resorts will "close" various towers and wings of their properties to better allocate their resources; i.e., lay off housekeepers, etc. if they know their occupancy is going to be low for several days or weeks. If a hotel has a tower with 300 rooms and one with 700 rooms and hotel operations knows they're only going to be 55% occupied for a certain period of time then no one gets assigned rooms in the tower with 300 rooms for the duration the hotel is forecasting low occupancy. Guests are blocked on rooms in the tower with 700 rooms, and the part of the hotel with 300 rooms is unoccupied for that period of time. It's a cost control issue, to allocate resources where they are most needed.

I can't imagine the cruise industry operates any different. If everybody in certain categories are "upgraded" out of entire decks on cruises that aren't sold out, DCL can "close" entire decks and not have to maintain those areas for the duration of the cruise. It isn't being done to be "nice" . . . it's being done to control costs.

Although for the person upgraded from at cat 11 to a cat 6, it sure is nice!
