Hi - hoping for some for detailed info from the WDW experts. One of those items on my list of things to do in my life is swim with a dolphin. I know you do not swim with one at Epcot, but am wondering on what you do in the 3 hr experience - all the UG comments on is watching a training session and wading in the water with them. Has anyone ever tried this who can give me more details? I know Discovery Cove has a program where you swim, but the experience there is only 45 minutes. With Canadian exchange rates it would cost $340 for that , and I just cannot justify as I won't be spending the day at the Cove. My son is going to be 5 and is not that competent a swimmer...plus again with exchange rates it would be $878 for the 3 of us to spend the day at Discovery Cove and I am just not willing to spend that when there are so many other things to see and do. I am from the west coast of Canada and do not make it down there too often.

Thank you so much for your help!!!!

.

I haven't done this. I'm going to bump this back to page one for you so that some of our veterans can offer advice.

Hi Maggie1,

I 'gave' the Dolphins In Depth tour to my DH as a wedding present in 2001. His recollection is as follows:
When you arrive you meet with the Living Seas representative who sits down with you in the attraction and gives you a run down of what's in store. He/she talks about the biology of the dolphin and goes over the rules.

Then you go into the behind the scenes area and you're shown some stuff about how dolphins communicate. They show you a device they have for the 'inter-species' communication research. They also take you into an area that is 'roped-off' from the general public, where you can watch the dolphins playing up close.

Next you go into a conference room area, and they show a video about dolphins, their communication, habits, behaviour, etc. He says they asked everyone to talk about themselves and why they were doing the tour.

Then you go to the change rooms and get your wetsuit. They take you back out to the tank, and you sit around a small portion of the tank that's outside of the 'main' Living Seas tank. They bring both dolphins into the smaller tank and one at a time they kinda 'jump' onto the concrete beside you, and they go over more of the 'structure' of the dolphin, and it's history (the dolphin's personal history). They do this for both dolphins.

Next it's back to the main tank area, and you stand on the 'roof' of the normal viewing area. This is where you get your 'one on one' session with the dolphin. You're standing in about 3 feet of water at this point. The trainer brings the dolphin up and you can pet it and talk to it, and ask the trainer any questions you have. You get about 5 minutes (although he says it felt shorter, so now he's not sure how long it was). They make a video tape of this while you're doing it that you get to take home with you.
After everyone's done, you're basically finished (except for showering, taking your wetsuit off, getting your shirt and tape, etc).

He says his memory is a little vague in some parts, but this is what he remembers. He really liked it, and wants to go again with me sometime (if only I wasn't afraid of being bitten by fish! lol). I did notice you mentioned your 5-year-old .. I don't know if you meant to take him on the tour, but I remember when I was booking it, they said you had to be over 13 to participate (this was before I mentioned it was for my husband .. heehee).

Apologies for the long post. Hope it helps you decide. :)

Beams,

Thank you for that wonderful summary! My niece and I will be doing this tour in May and now I am really excited! I had no idea that it included "one-on-one" time with the dolphins! That's really exciting and sounds very fun.

Glad to help. If you (or anyone else ... heh) has any more questions, feel free to PM me and I'll pick DH's brain some more.

Enjoy your trip! :)

thank you so much Beamsoflight...that was a great summary! I am definitely going to do it. I find dolphins so fascinating - they are so smart-so I look forward to more than just the interaction! (ps. I know my son is too young - it will be just me on this one!)

BeamsofLight,

Would you please ask DH how much time was involved from start to finish?

Thank you

I read that they no longer offer a video tape of the experience. You only get a photo now.
[/QUOTE]Dolphins In Depth

Dolphins in Depth Epcot A behind-the-scenes experience for Guests interested in learning more about the dolphins and research at The Living Seas, as well as those wanting to increase their awareness and appreciation for dolphin counterparts in the wild. Expectant mothers may not take the tour. You must be at least 13 years old to attend and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult. Wetsuits are provided but your must bring your own swimsuit. You will be in water up to your waist for about 30 minutes. Offered Mondays through Fridays at 9:45am and lasts approximately 3 hours. The $150 cost includes a photograph with the dolphin, refreshments, and a T-shirt. Theme park admission is not required or included. Tour begins near the outside Guest Relations window. Disney provides showers, shampoo, towels, soap and the wetsuits and booties. No swimming required. No cameras or video taping is allowed. Dolphin interaction is NOT guaranteed. It is the dolphin's choice to participate in the research sessions as well as the interactions.

I believe I dropped him off at Guest Relations at 9:15 (when they told us to be there), the group went in about 9:30, and we met up again around 1 .. maybe closer 1:15. So the estimate of 3 hours in the quote from epcotfan is pretty accurate for the actual tour, but the dropping off/picking up adds a bit to it.

It's a shame they don't do a video anymore. Since I couldn't watch 'live', it was the only way for me to see what went on.

He does remember them saying that the dolphins will only 'participate' if they want to, the trainers don't force them. He vaguely remembers one of the trainers told them one of the dolphins wasn't as sociable as the other one. They were both present for DH's experience though.
