We stayed through the Concierge Collection for a 5 day weekend in November 2002. We stayed with our two children - ages 7 and 9. I thought the resort was great - we used the blue lagoon pool quite a bit, and my wife spent half a day at the spa, which she loved and I worked out in the fitness centre every day. I did not golf on this particular weekend. Overall, you will find the grounds lovely and the staff generally very helpful. We did not eat at any of the "formal" restaurants at the resort, however, did have lunch at the more casual restaurants - food was good, and a bit on the pricey side, but not out of this world. We booked a standard room and had a garden view - we have travelled quite a bit and I would classify the rooms as above average - nice, but not extravagant - they are probably on par with a Westin, upper end Sheraton.
The resort itself can be a destination unto itself, if you want to golf, tennis, workout, spa and swim. However, if you want to explore the general Miami area, the resort should be considered a good base for exploring. The beach is about 20 miles away, and there are several good shopping malls within a 20-45 minute drive. There is lots of traffic around Doral during morning and afternoon rush hours, so plan your day trip accordingly.
Overall, we had a great time and are actually going back to the resort in March 2004 - however, this time, we are spending a week at the Marriott Villas at Doral, which is on the Doral property, but a little farther away from the main pool, spa etc.. It is actually across the street and you have a 5-10 minute walk to get to the main pool area.
Hope this helps...Rick
