Anyone train in Vibrams?

I was just running in my vffs and this man stopped me and started yelling at me for my incorrect footwear!

:rotfl: I get a lot of odd looks, but no one has yelled at me yet.

I'm (temporarily) back in my old Mizunos for a bit. I was on a road run on Sunday and did something bad to one of the bones in my foot, so I am cheating and using the extra support and cushioning of my clunkers to get through my runs.

Be careful, stress fractures are one of the most common injuries for runners in VFFs:

I run some barefoot, but I am very careful about it. There is nothing wrong with rotating in running shoes. Right now I could not log all the miles I need to barefoot, even if I wanted to.

I'm pretty sure it is just a bone bruise. It's been a couple days, and it's already mostly healed, so it wasn't too bad, whatever it was. (It was probably made worse by the fact that I got to drive for a good four and a half hours shortly after I did it, instead of RICEing.) I think I just landed badly on a rough section of the road - it was a country road, just over a lane wide, and no real shoulder to speak of - and thus, not much room to dodge when cars came.

I'm hardheaded enough to run when I shouldn't, in order to maintain my streak, but believe me, if I had been gasping in pain when trying to run (or even muttering a constant litany of "ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch"), I would have stopped.

I often have people stop me and ask me about them/tell me I look weird, but this guy was really mad at me - I am not sure at what point my feet became his business :confused3 I was very polite though and just thanked him :flower3: and then I used my anger at being yelled at to fuel my last 1.5 miles.

Hope your foot feels better soon.

I am sure people do overuse vffs, but I was in the "correct" shoes (that had been fitted with pressure sensors, and laser alignment, and anything else the store had to help fit shoes) with orthotics in them, and I was injured constantly (I ran Goofy last year with a stress fracture in my shin) and now I alternate with my vffs I am pain free for the first time since I started running, so they get my vote

OMG are you serious? That is just flat out unreal!:headache: I would've been steaming. I'm with you- I have far fewer problems running in VFFs.

On the flip side I was in Target this morning & a guy passed me, came back & marveled over the VFFs, to the point he hollered out to his wife, beckoning to 'come see these shoes'. She emerged to say 'oh, they are so cute!'. Not that this has anything to do w/running, but it was pretty hilarious anyway.

How far have you gone in them so far? I have 10 scheduled for tomorrow, but I'm not sure I should attempt it. I've only gone 5 so far.

I know - I was pretty close to telling him where to shove his advice :thumbsup2 I felt like asking him what he knew about me or my feet

I have had plenty of funny stories wearing them - especially when I wear them to Disney (which they are great for btw) - One person thought they were just the shoes "kids were wearing these days" he was very shocked when I told him I ran in them :rotfl2:

I have done 6, and it felt really good actually - I am going for 10 on Sunday and if I am still feeling relatively okay after that I am going to buy a new pair (partly because of the strap thing and partly because I keep tripping over my big toe in them and I have made a hole on top of the top :sad2:)

How did your 5 feel? I feel like if I can do 10 I can do W&D (Goofy is still up for debate though :worship:)

5 felt great, just tiring. If you can do 10, you can definitely do the 1/2! :thumbsup2

If you do the Goofy in them, you're a wild woman!!:scared1: :worship:

I did 9 today, but I confess, in sneaks. It was all pavement & I was actually running to work, so I didn't want to take the chance of pooping out 1/2 way because I couldn't be late today. Running in them Saturday for as far as I can go...

I am doing goofy two years in a row - I think I passed wild a couple junctions ago! (or crazy at least). I will let you know how my 10 go, and if I can move afterwards!

LOL. I just noticed the "Goofy on Ice" tag (yep, a little slow on the uptake). I was there that weekend, just running the 5k though. O for the love of Pete it was the most awful weather!! I just can't believe you Goofed it! My friend tried the 1/2 & ended up getting pulled with hypothermia. You ran in sneaks, right?

Yes I ran in Sneaks - it was awful - I was sick for weeks afterwards - if I wasn't so damn stubborn I wouldn't even have showed up. I have honestly never been so cold in all my life as I was after the half - I was praying that I could pass out so I could go for a ride in a warm ambulance . I dont remeber much of the full - I think I just switched to auto pilot :confused3 but anyways I am praying for heat this year (not too much though:thumbsup2)

I did it! :cool1: 10 miles in my vffs I felt really good and felt the strongest I have all this training season - I'm not gonna lie - I hurt like hell right now :scared1: but I pushed myself hard and I don't think I hurt anymore than if I had run in my sneaks (except maybe my calves!)

My toe nails are a little sore and I have a little blister on my big toe - but again that would happen on a double digit run in my sneak too.

So all in all I think it was a success :thumbsup2 and I am thinking I can do W&D in them. :scared1:

Okay - I need to eat and take a nap now!

Whooo hooo! That's fantastic!

I did 9 on Thurs in sneaks then 3 yesterday in Vibes- they just felt so much better! Long run in Vibes this week for sure. You've inspired me!

Thanks :)

My calves were less than inspired to move this morning :lmao: but they are loosening up, and I don't hurt anywhere else at all really - I even swam a mile at the pool this morn :woohoo:

You can do it!

Kirsty

Well you know the calf issue is to be expected. You warmed them up in the pool which is great!

I did 4.75 in them today. Ok it was on the treadmill, but here's the crazy part--yesterday, through the night, & most of the day today my tibialus (spelling?) & inner knees were killing me for no particular reason. My lower legs took very little time to warm up on the TM & now they feel great!

When I did the 9 in sneaks the other day I swear my lower legs didn't start feeling good until like mile 3. I'm going to brave the pavement in the VFFs this weekend. Haven't really done much of that before, mostly dirt.

Good luck on Sunday, btw!:cool1: Can't wait to hear if you wore the VFFs!

Good luck with your pavement running. Just listen to your body. If it hurts, quit doing it.

So great to follow your progress in the vibrams. I will switch over my training to them after Wine&Dine Half. The Nike Free just isn't barefoot enough...I am still heel striking. Although I know it's much better than before :).

Just a quick update on my training - I am still stuck in my Mizunos, but I am have been keeping my runs short and slow in order to give myself more time to heal. I am hoping to be working my way back into my Vibrams next week, and then transition back to running in them all the time over a couple weeks after that.

I miss my funky-looking, yet incredibly comfortable, Bikilas though.

hey guys!

So I went a little crazy this morning and decided to do my short run barefoot (on a sidewalk). It actually felt really good, my joints hurt less than ever - the only problem I have right now is that the bottoms of my feet hurt (just like a small blister like feel) I think it is just because my feet aren't used to running 2 miles on hard surfaces! But you guys should have seen the faces of some of the people as I ran past - you think you get weird looks wearing vffs :lmao:

Anyway just thought I would let you guys know it was kinda nice running with no shoes. :confused3

I actually did a few barefoot miles before switching over to the Vibrams. Blistered up the bottoms of my feet pretty well, but it was worth it for the looks people gave me as I padded past them. :lmao:
