Anyone that cut the Transderm Scop Patch in quarters? How did it work?

This. DEFINITELY try it before you go.

Not everyone has side effects. Also, be sure & change the patch after 3 days.

*Most* side effects happen after several days' use.

Sayhello

Hum! I would have never thought that. I figured the first day would be the worst.

Seeing that the transdermal scop patch is a slowly released drug, it takes a bit to build up in your system. Some people feel the effects within a couple of hours to a day but there are those that take the full 3 days for the med to be at its max effect. Could be affected by a person's metabolism, if the person is very sweaty and the patch doesn't stick well, etc. Even when the patch is removed, it takes a little bit of time for the med to wear off.

I used the patch for my recent DCL cruise. It worked very well. My only issue, and it was a huge issue, was that I had residual effect after back on land. It took nearly 7 land days for me to get the feeling that I was on a rocking ship out of my system. It was horrible and debilitating. Some info says it can last indefinately. I feel very lucky that it eventually went away, and I will never use the patch and take that risk again.

Having used the Transderm patches for all of our cruises I recommend it. Our first cruise on Disney I was 12 and I don't suffer from any motion sickness whatsoever, but boy did I get sea sick. I didn't put the patch on because I didn't think I'd need it. After having to skip dinner the first night because I laid in bed all night sick my mom forced me to put a patch on. The next morning I didn't feel sick at all. We use them religiously now.

As far as side effects...all of us in my family only get two side effects from the patches: dry mouth, and becoming far-sighted. Nothing major. Something we can all accept in exchange for not getting motion sickness and being able to enjoy our cruise :)

OH MY this is not the thread I should be reading. :lmao: My biggest fear has always been getting so sick that I don't enjoy the cruise. UGH Probably why we never booked one. :scared1: Okay subscribing.

In my nursing classes, I was taught never cut a pill that is not scored and never ever alter a patch. If a pill is not scored, cutting it may change properties of the med such as rate of release.

UsedTransderm Scop years ago and plan to get more before our April cruise. Things that I distinctly remember: Do not touch the patch or put it on and then mess with your contact lenses! I had to throw out contacts after they became contaminated. When I use them (patches) I keep dilated pupils, eyes can be light sensitive, so keep good sunglasses with you. These things cause me to sleep talk/sleep walk, don't know if others experience this. As for the hallucinations, I don't recall them per se, but I do recall talking with a friend years ago and we both remember dreaming in color!

That feeling of still having sea legs isn't due to the patch. That can happen to anybody. We had that happen after our Mexican Riviera cruise which was pretty rough and we didn't take anything at all. Well, our DS took Dramamine. Not sure what everyone has against taking that. :confused3 It works like a charm. He was 8 - his pediatrician had said it would be OK for him to have 1 every 24 hours. It was our first cruise - none of us knew what to expect but so I brought some with us just in case. DH and I were fine but around 7:00-7:30 on our first night he started feeling sick (right before dinner). As soon as I realized he was sea sick I gave him one of those & the feeling passed in about 30 minutes. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 SAVED dinner for us!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

On our last cruise out of PC I knew that many people have problems the first night as they cross the Gulf Stream so we all took one around the time we boarded as a precaution. WE were all fine but there were plenty of people around us who were not.

Another pharmacist chiming in....please don't cut the patches! As a previous poster mentioned, the drug is contained in a reservoir surrounded by a membrane that controls the rate of release of the drug through the skin, so that one gets a certain amount of medication per hour that the patch is on. Cutting creates an opening in that sealed reservoir and causes the drug to "ooze out" at an uncontrolled rate.

If you're familiar with the peanut butter & jelly Uncrustables sandwiches, think of the PB&J as the drug and the crust as the membrane. Slice the sandwich in half and the "drug" is freely accessible. Of course, in the real patch, this is all happening at a microscopic level that can neither be seen or felt by the user. Scopolamine is a drug where it only takes a very very small amount to get a therapeutic effect. By cutting the patch, you could experience extreme side effects from receiving a potentially toxic dose.

Another warning: when discarding the patch, be certain that it's not in a wastebasket that can be accessed by small children or pets. It's definitely not something you want anybody chewing on.

There is no pediatric version or reduced dosage for Transderm Scop. Unfortunately, it's a One Size Fits All formulation.

In my nursing classes, I was taught never cut a pill that is not scored and never ever alter a patch. If a pill is not scored, cutting it may change properties of the med such as rate of release.

Exellent advice!....or at least call the pharmacy and ask first. There are actually many meds that are not scored and can be safely cut with a pill cutter designed for the job. Certain drugs with special coatings or almost any drug that is a timed release formulation should not be cut, chewed or crushed. Sometimes it's not always obvious what category things fall into.

It took me a year and a half to get back to normal. My doctor said it was called "Mal de debarquement". I was really hesitant to book this next cruise because of it. I hate walking around feeling like i'm in a boat 24/7

I used the patch and my DH only used sea bands and ginger cookies.

We both felt the way you did for a couple of days so I never considered it to be a side effect. All I can say is that we felt like the Poly was rocking and we know it wasn't.:confused3

Do you attribute it to the patch or just to being at sea? Just curious, and I'm glad you are feeling better now.

The rocking after debarking isn't necessarily connected with the patch. I don't do anything for seasickness and I have the rocking land problem after every cruise I take. I didn't particularly pay attention to it after our first cruise (15 nights), it only lasted a few days. After our second cruise (7 nights), I was swaying and pitching for about 3 weeks. After our last cruise (24 nights), it didn't seem as bad, lasting about 2 weeks.

Back to the original conversaion: My DH used the patch for our first 2 cruises with no problem except a little dry mouth. On our last cruise, after about a week (probably on the 3rd patch by then) he was light-headed and dopey. Since the seas at that time were actually quite mild, he took the patch off and in about a day he was doing fine. One night we had quite a cross current so the ship was rolling a bit more than usual, we purchased the wrist bands in the shop onboard and he used those for a couple of days. He didn't use the patch for the rest of the cruise and was fine.

:cutie:

This has nothing to do with the patch. My husband had this just as badly or worse than I did and he took no motion sickness meds of any kind.

I wasn't using the patch on that cruise, so it was just the sea. It was my first cruise and I didn't even know about the patch until I was on board and saw tons of people wearing them. I was fine on the ship until we went through this huge storm during the middle of the night and I woke up feeling like I was about to die. I managed to find the dramamine and took that the rest of the time. I was hoping the patch would help this time around, since I would be medicated before getting on the ship.

We were just on the Magic in January. My best friend and her family came with us. She was VERY sick, it usually hit her hardest as she was coming into the dining room for dinner. She was taking the bonine pills and they weren't really helping. She went to the gift shop and bought the pressure bracelets, and wore them in conjunction with the bonine pills and she was SO MUCH BETTER!
She wished that she'd gotten the bracelets earlier. :)

I had terrible side effects with the patch. My mouth got so dry, I was nauseated. My vision was bllurry. After vomitting violently, i ripped the patch off. On cruise #2, I used bonine pills. They worked well for me. Good luck to you!:thumbsup2
