Planning on going home to the BWV in August and instead of flying or driving that maybe the auto-train would be a new experience for the kids. I know it's not faster and maybe not 1st class but hey most years we drive so what the heck.

How was the trip?
What did you book? seating, standard bedroom, deluxe, family?

Traveling with three adults and a dd 10, ds 13.

Thanks for any feedback or advice.

Have you gone to the Amtrack site and checked out the prices? We were thinking of this as an option, but were taken back by the cost. Might as well fly. I'll be interested in seeing other's response.

Too bad the search function is disabled, because there's quite a bit of information on the autotrain here.

Here's a bit of what I've added in the past as information:
__________________________________________________

The autotrain for us has been a most pleasurable way to travel. We live in Northern NJ (Bergen County) and the drive to Lorton, VA is about 5 hours for us (4 1/2 actual driving with 2 pit stops along the way). We left on a Saturday around 7AM and arrived at the Autotrain station about noon. We were concerned that we'd hit the dreaded Saturday NJ shore traffic along the way, but we didn't - probably because we took the NJ Turnpike. It was completely enjoyable, starting with our drive down - getting there was half the fun!

Last July (2001) there were 4 of us traveling - Myself, husband, teen daughter and friend (both 15).
We travelled coach and there was enough room for us to spread out and have a double seat each. We were in a car with mostly adults and teens. The girls had a great time.
There was another mom there with 4 teens - she has travelled by autotrain for many years and had tried all the different types of sleeping car accomodations and her preference was to travel coach - and cost was least motivating factor. Sleep wise - she said she had just as restful sleeps in coach as she did in the most restful nights she spent in a sleeper. Food wise -her verdict was that the food presentation in first class was a little nicer, but the quality and certainly the quantity was not noticeably better than that in coach. Diversion wise - it was definitely much better in coach. She especially emphasized that - once the children were over 6 years old they were better behaved and were better travelers in coach since there was more room to move around and more to see.

Our girls planned to "stay up all night" - they didn't want to miss anything. For the most part, they did and planned to do it again on the trip back. My husband slept some on the way down because he was sure he wouldn't sleep at all (for the record, he sleeps very little as it is and always has problems sleeping in any bed that's not his own - it takes him a few nights in a hotel to get used to a bed before he gets a restful nights sleep). I probably slept the most and was more rested than I thought I'd be. The rocking of the train was actually helpful. I think your mindset has a lot to do with how much rest you get.

We met many interesting people on the train and had some great conversations. The girls both amused themselves and met others their age and spent some time talking with the others and observing the onboard "living coach theater" (and I don't mean the movie in the lounge car!. The ability to get up, walk around and be a part of the group made the short trip quite pleasurable. We figured that our time on the train was only 16 hours - with only a few that were really conventional "sleeping" hours. We never even considered a sleeper car and after talking to some of the coach passengers on the train who had travelled both in sleepers and coach and switched to coach we're happy that we didn't spend the extra money to do so.

We're going back by autotrain in August (2002). Instead of a friend for my daughter, my sister will be joining us - we'll be going coach again.

The cost for the 4 of us - all adult fares - is a few hundred dollars less (a very substantial saving!) than 4 air fares and car rental for 12 days. It is definitely a very relaxing and comfortable way to travel. We've done the drive once (never again, even if we were to hire a driver!) and we always took airlines previous to last July (2001), but even before September 11, air travel hassles were getting on my nerves. For the forseeable future, the autotrain will be our preferred mode of travel

And this one on costs:
________________________________________
A van or suv is usually a little more than double the cost for a car, since they take up more space on the Autotrain. Cars are triple stacked, vans and suvs can only be double stacked. We always use our car rather than the suv because of this price differential.

Also, fares will only go up the closer you get to your travel date - the fare you were quoted is actually pretty good.

We're going in August (2002) - both ways (depart on a Sat, return on a weekday). In March I booked our trip (5 months out) and our AAA fare for 3 Adults and 1 child with a car is $930.60. I checked the fare today (at www.amtrak.com), 3 months later, and the car fare has stayed the same, but the passenger fare has increased 26% - $179 more!

It's actually less expensive for us to take the Autotrain rather than fly and rent a car for the 14 days we're away. Driving the entire way is not an option for us, but if it were, we'd have to figure in gas, wear and tear on the car and overnight hotel and food expenses in addition to extreme driver stress and passenger crankyness!! Dinner and breakfast is included in the autotrain fare.

I have been on the amtrack site. Coach for 5 is $844.00 with a standard car and the AAA discount. I'm not a big fan of flying and try to avoid it unless it's for work and then I have no choice. I did look into jet blue out of JFK and found a rate under $200 each but I still need to get to the airport and then rent a car for two weeks. So driving or the train I think works out less and of course the train would be part of the vacation adventure.

I did a search and found lot's of posts but nothing in the past few months and was hoping for a comparison between coach and standard sleeper.

Looks like I will just book the coach and enjoy the time with the kids instead of driving.

Also heard I should book via the phone and request to not be placed in a "family" car since we could end up with the crying at night issues and my children are beyong that age.

We have taken the AutoTrain 4 times. It is a very good experience. It is relaxing to watch the world go by. The coach seating is more than adequate. We would have taken it again last year however at times flying is cheaper than the Train. Watch those prices. You get better deals the further out you book.

Thanks for the posts and the links. With the great information from these posts I will book the auto train down for the August trip. I figure to book the train in a month or so after I cover the costs for the park hoppers.

Thanks and I will be sure to post some feedback once we return on our thoughts on the train.

Ennisbib:

If you want to us the two-for-one special you must book by February 15, 2003. This can mean a significant savings.

WindJammer:

Thanks for the heads up. I just check and my return in 8/29 I miss the deal by one day :( It's still a good price based on factoring in the hotel, meals, and such.

I wish I had looked on the boards before I bought my autotrain tickets. I just received them in the mail yesterday. I didn't know about the buy one get one free deal.

I wonder if I can cancel my tickets and rebook with the at the discounted rate?

Anyone have experience with this?

Scakul:

I understand that if you use the code H225 the tickets are nonrefundable but if you bought them without a discount code I think they can be refunded or changed.

Hopefully someone at Amtrak can give you a straight answer.

Steve

My understanding is that there is a $30 per passenger change/refund fee on all tickets (except, of course, non-refundable). I made an Auto-Train reservation yesterday for my next trip in late-Nov. and the agent confirmed the change fee.

So, you may be able to exchange the tickets for the cheaper ones, less the $30/person fee. Hopefully you'll realize a savings that makes it worth it.

One thing I've learned is that it really does make sense to reserve as far in advance as possible.. I was tracking a fare for the Nov. trip for the last few weeks and over the weekend it bounced from $740 r/t to $792 round trip. It based on availability and capacity controls.

Hope this helps.

Anyone have pictures or have any experience with either of these two types of accomodations? I went on Amtrak's web site and found out the big cost difference between the two. Just curious if the family sleeper is worth the extra cost, family of 4, $798 (reserved coach) versus $1381.50 (family sleeper). I personaly like the idea of having your own accomodations and being able to stretch-out during the trip, playing your own DVDs, games etc.

In any case, I am definitely convinced this is better than driving down I95 with all the crazy 85+mph drivers! We only live about 30 minutes south of Lorton, VA.

We did the family suite. It was fine, once the beds come down, it gets a little crowded. DH is 6'4" and he slept fine. It is really fun! I would do it again in a heart beat. I loved it!! We brought DVDs, CDs, cards, games, our own snacks and drinks. The family suites are on the first floor so they are easy to access with all your luggage. Don't bring too much luggage, as there really isn't any place to store it. I would bring my own pillows and blankets. I have not traveled coach so I really can't help you there. I personally would not travel coach. I have two little DDs (6 & 7) and I wouldn't be able to sleep a wink, I would be afraid someone would come a long and snatch them (I know, I know, I am being VERY paranoid!!!). The bathrooms and showers were very clean the the food wasn't at all bad.

Are there any AC outlets for PCs and other electronic equipment so we don't have to rely on batteries?

Yes, there are a few AC outlets in the rooms. We usually bring out laptop and watch DVD's during the trip.

To bad the family suite has two shorter bunks. DS13 DD 10 will not fit on the bunks unless the curl up. Seems the only cost effective way for me is coach.

Do they have power in the coach area for a laptop? We are not going until August but I will take some pictures so in the future folks can have some idea what the train is like.

If anybody else has some pictures it would be great if you could post them or post a link. Hey even email them to me.

Thanks

You have got to be kidding me! The smaller bunks are that short? I was expecting four full size for a family of four! Amtrak's definition of "family" must be slightly different than mine.
