Dr just prescribe this to me for my migraines and weight issues. He said this drug would take care of both my problems.

I came home after filling my prescription and did some internet searches.  Those side effects scare the heck out of me. The worst one is memory lost! I'm in college and can't afford to lose my memory :rotfl: .

So is there anyone here that takes Topamax that can tell me if this is true. I need something for my migraines (the weight loss part is just a bonus) but don't want to have mush for brains.

My husband has been taking Topamax for about a year now and we both take Relpax for our Migraines. I can tell you that I noticed he did have some memory problems . . . more short term than long term.

But the real problem we have now is with his Kidney's. His creatine levels are really high and we are awaiting his appointment for a specialist. We did some reasearch and saw that Kidney problems is also a possible side effect.

Now let me tell you he is taking a high dose of Topamax . . . 200 mg a day.

I take Topamax, and for a short time I was having a little trouble finding the words I was trying to say, but it went away quickly. I rarely get a migraine at all anymore, and I've lost 35 lbs since July. :)

I started a thread about this awhile back. Lots of people posted their experiences.

Here's the link.

I am currently taking Topomax and I am also in college. I too was scared when I read that side effect as well. Both my mom and my sister are taking it for migraines and it has done wonders for all of us. In the first few months on it I lost aroung 20 lbs. I did have some memory loss, but not in a way that would effect my school work. I just kept forgetting little things. I now keep a note pad around and write everything down. I can live with that over the once a week migraines.

What dose are you all on? I am on 50mg and will stay at that at least until the middle of December. I went up to 75mg and noticed I was very down in the dumps and weepy. I was also more agitated with my husband while on the higher dose. So, my neuro bumped me down to 50mg. I am doing well on that but have not noticed any weight loss. He said I may need to be on a higher dose to see those results. So, I was just wondering what doses you were on.

I'm on 50mg a day. 25mg in the morning, 25mg at bedtime.

Don't feel bad. It's not you. When I posted about this drug, other people thought the same thing. :rotfl2:

Dear Partner had it for a while, it made her sick and tired all the time. So she quit it.

Thanks for the replys. I just dont want it to interfear with my school work. When I read about the memory lost I was like no way jose!! I'm not the brightest student on campus and don't need anything to make it worse.

Dr Has wants me to take it like this. First week 1 -25mg at night before bed, Second week 1 tab twice daily, third week one tab in the morning (i think the 2nd and 3rd are backwards on my bottle), forth week 2 in the morning and 2 at night before bed. That will work me up to a 100 mg a day. I might hold off on taking them until I'm done with this semster.

Thanks

I was on it for over a year. I finally couldn't take the side effects any more - so I quit.

I had memory loss, weight gain (?), and many other issues. I take relpax and it doesn't work well for me - but the side effects of Topamax were just too much to take.

I hope it works better for you.

you might also ask your Dr. about beta blockers, I take them for my BP but it has almost eliminated my migraines with no side effects.

Very true. Inderal helped my mom tremendously. Didn't do anything for me though. :(
