Anyone stockpiling food?

I work at a grocery store (one that's known for being stocked), and our shelves are WIPED. Hand sanitizer and other cleaning supplies have been gone since Sunday and the shipment that came yesterday was immediately gone. I would say 90% of the cans and non perishable food are gone, too. It's nuts.

What part of the country? It seems the reaction is different across the country.

There doesn't seem to be any panic buying or unnecessary stockpiling in my area. My local Shop Rite had plenty of toilet paper, bottled water, OTC meds, Clorox wipes, etc.
Same here in NE Ohio. I ran to Target on my lunch break yesterday for something else, but decided to take a gander at the TP, Clorox wipe, OTC meds, & Purell situations, shelves were stocked per usual. We have a friend who works for GoJo here in Ohio, the maker of Purell, and he mentioned the shortages and that they were ramping up production.

Most of the Duane Reades here in Manhattan and my neighborhood ones in Queens I've checked are now out of hand sanitizer and most Clorox items. I have a few mini bottles so I feel ok (especially since I have a full sized work one on my desk) and I grabbed some Wet Ones to supplement in case it goes on a bit. Other than that, most things are in fine supply, it seems.

In studying MERS and SARS in laboratory mice, scientists found that estrogen seemed to have a protective effect. They had similar rates of death with female and male mice as they saw in the human populations (i.e. more male mice died than females), and then when they suppressed estrogen in the female mice, more died. It seems that this virus may be similar enough to SARS and MERS -that we are seeing a similar pattern.

Also, it is theorized that the X chromosome has something to do with it. It's a complicated interplay between the protein the virus latches onto and the role the X chromosome plays in that. Women, having 2, have a sort of fail safe built in that men don't, since they only have one X chromosome.
Smoking may also possibly be linked to the higher severity rates among males in China. No data is provided yet but it's make sense considering the much higher proportion of males who smoke compared to females.

So I went to Walmart and Target today. I’m in Las Vegas.

When walking into Walmart I was immediately greeted by a huge display of water palettes. They seemed to be throughout the store and there was plenty. In Target they *had* a display but it was pretty well hit as well as the normal water section. Both places just about every person had ridiculous amounts of water in their carts. :confused3

In the Pharmacy section Walmart was hit hard in the pain reliever/fever section but if you dug around you could find some. I picked up a bottle of generic Tylenol. I went looking for their adult liquid Tylenol for my oldest but no luck. It’s usually hit or miss on a regular day though. The cold/flu isle was ransacked but there were plenty of meds to be had as well as displays of them. Oddly there was a display of Apple Cider Vinegar, lemon juice and honey. The honey was ransacked? At Target both were well stocked. Things like vitamins, first aid etc. seemed well stocked at both places. Kids meds were plentiful.

Further down rubbing alcohol seemed hard hit but you could readily buy some. At Walmart every kind of wipe was well, wiped out including baby and face wipes. No hand sanitizer or hand wipes to be found. Pretty much the same at Target except there were face wipes aplenty. At Target feminine pads shelves were empty. (lucky for DD it’s something I always stock up on) Hand soap hit hard at both places but you could get it. Shampoo and body wash was plentiful. Apparently people don’t think they’ll need showers if they’re locked away in their homes.:rotfl2:

Paper towels seemed plentiful while brand name toilet paper seemed to take a hit. Plenty of generic though. Clorox wipes were just about gone but there was generic. I didn’t think to look at canned food but the grocery sections in both places seemed rather quiet and didn’t look out of the ordinary.

Both places had people re stocking in every section. They looked exhausted. I had forgotten to look for a church key (which is why I went) at Walmart so swung back through the pharmacy section and low and behold there were four bottles of liquid Tylenol. I grabbed two.

Honey for sore throats. I mix hot water, lemon and honey when I’m congested or have a sore throat.

Add a little Crown Royal and you have a nice hot toddy. The bartender at the ESPN made me one when I had a horrendous cold a few years ago. That and the gluhwein in Germany did more for my sore throat and cough than any cough medicine.

Did you see this? I sure hope he wasn't taking the train during the time he was sick. and coughing and sneezing. My friend's dh and many of our neighbors commute on it, I expect more cases will be confirmed up here.

https://nypost.com/2020/03/03/coronavirus-patient-reportedly-commuted-on-metro-north/

I expect more cases too. I'm actually surprised we got as far as we did without cases before this. I was surprised when they sent tests in to the CDC for the first 3 suspected cases, about 5 weeks ago, then another 2, and the CDC was taking DAYS to get to them. I understand they are inundated with tests and each person counts equally.(The test itself takes only 4 hours.) However, the amount of people who shuffle by each other on a minute basis here, with 8 million people crammed into subway cars & platforms, stores and offices, potentially exposed and/or exposing others is great. We need to know more immediately when a person is confirmed. (NOW, our city has been given it's own test kits. :thumbsup2 )

The news said last night that a 4th school has been closed along with the lawyer's law firm. The 7 people who worked with him have been warned of being exposed to Coronavirus and have to watch for symptoms. Each of those 7 people have had contact with many people. So the chain continues. . . :(

I'm going to the Celine Dion concert tomorrow nite. That had better not get canceled.

Apparently, you can also use honey for wound care. It has some antibiotic properties... especially Manuka honey, I think.

I learned this on my deep dive into end-of-the-world preppers.

I learned that reading Outlander. lol

So, hoping this is not hijacking this thread. What are some natural ways to help with coughing? That is always my downfall and traditional codeine cough syrup has never helped. Just thought that I might keep some ingredients around just in case. Thanks

The honey was ransacked?

Honey has also been shown to help kids not cough as much, especially at night. It has been a great thing for our family, since kids don't have the cold meds options that adults do.

Inside Edition, had a segment on making alcohol wipes. It's basically aloe vera gel,(to keep the hands from drying out, the the alcohol from dripping all over,) rubbing alcohol, and a couple drops of essential oil, like lavendar, for a scent.

Shampoo can actually be used as hand soap. Soap is soap. It's just usually more highly scented than hand soap.

I just want to say thank you for telling me your location. All these replies on empty shelves, pics of long lines, etc.......I don't need your house address but what vicinity are you guys in???
Went to shoprite in Connecticut this morning and they were stocked with everything.

Agreed, the zombies can have me.
Yep!

Back when we were still watching The Walking Dead, I never thought any of it looked like fun or anything I ever wanted to be a part of.

I don't watch any zombie TV shows so I don't know how to fight them, other than shooting them in the head. :( I can hold my own against other supernatural creatures. But, if it comes to zombies, I'll be toast. :duck:

No stockpiling. I am not the stockpiling type so I guess I'll be screwed if there's an apocalypse. I don't even run to the grocery store when there is an actual predicted snow storm. I hit the liquor store and maybe grab some take out.
