Ive been sick for about a week and half to 2 weeks now..just a cold, cough congestion..well the last 4 or 5 day it has gotten really bad and i went to the dr and am on meds--couldnt go to work yesterday..
this morning i woke up, and i guess it moved to my sinuses...i can barely breath and the whole right side of my face is swollen and hurts...i called the dr again and they said "o its sinuses..we dont have an appointmenet open"...well its friday and i NEED to get in--so i begged adn now i go in at 3..which of course means i cant go to work again...

so how long does the sinus portion of this last?

Wow, sinus crap can last a long time. What type of meds are you already on?

If the sinuses are infected, an antibiotic will sometimes help, although many doctors are getting away from that now.

The best thing you can do is "steam" yourself, maybe take a guiafenisen product (it will loosen secretions).

I feel for you! I've been sick for the last 2 weeks also. I hope you feel better soon!

I agree with christine, steam seemed to help a bit. I've been taking long hot showers for some releif. And drink GALLONS of water.

Yep, it has gone around my family. For the kids and I, it lasted about a week, but my husband has had it for about 2 weeks now. He went to the doc and got some meds but they don't really seem to be doing anything but making him groggy.

Thanks guys-
Right now they gave me Zythromax..
i have had sinus infections before, but ive never had this pain ...i woke up in the middle of the night and was crying because the pain got so b ad....

Ill have to try the stuff you mentioned--thanks!!

Well, the Zithromax should work on the infection (if there is one) although it's not the best for sinus infections but it will do!!

Anyway, my mom has gotten terrible sinus infections and what works for her is a prescription strength decongestant taken for a few days. It knocks her out but it helps to clear things right up.

Zithromax has never worked for my sinus infections. I get them bad  Try taking long hot showers, and don't be afraid to use decongestants. The decongestants get rid of *some* of the pressure, which alleviates some of the pain. I once had a severe sinus infection for three weeks. Those were the only 2 things that worked

Yep. This is what works best for my mom. She usually suffers for about 3 weeks before she even goes into the doctor. Then the doctor asks her to use the decongestants before the antibiotic (they really don't like to use them anymore). She says that a few days of a good decongestant really gets the thing on its way out.

Yep, I had this over Christmas. Took two different antibiotics to get rid of it. Feel better!

As someone who suffers from sinus infections each winter...whenever the discomfort gets where I can't take it anymore, I go to the doc for antibiotics, and with 24 hours, things begin to get better.

Sinus infections left unchecked can lead to some serious complications for some people (per my doc)

I've never been able to tell than any of the OTC sinus medicines do ANYTHING for a full blown sinus infection.

It's good that you are treating it. I tried NOT treating sinus infections in the past and got really high fevers and the infection got worse. My infection turned into a little tumor in my cheek that one dr. recommended having removed (they go thru your nose!) and another dr. said leave it alone, which i did. It has never bothered me unless i get a sinus headache and it hurts on that side more. When i would get the bad sinus infections, i would have them drain my nose, which feels weird, but does not hurt. It doesn't last too long though. I had a bad reaction to the Z-pac, hopefully it will work for you. hope you feel better!

I use to get those -- was put on augmentin 1000s , those work

Then I started taking an herb cat's claw right before the season -- and I have not had one since -- around beginning of sept I start for three weeks--the first 2 days 2pills 3x a day , then for the remainder 2 pills 2x a day -- this works wonders

Zpacs do work, however you need to get a Zpac x2, which means you are taking 2 different packs of Zithro. Actually the last time I was on both Zithromax, piggybacked with Augmentin. I agree Augmentin worked better for me, but it tore up my stomach. Good luck.

You are right. Sinus infections can be very hard to treat because you're talking about an infection in a closed space. It is not uncommon to need 3 wks of treatment with 2 powerful antibiotics. There just isn't much OTC that will "fix" it.

And i can attest to the danger of untreated sinus infections. One of my best friends developed viral meningitis w/complications from an untreated sinus infection. My mother's dentist developed cardiomyopathy(infection to the heart) and is partially disabled now with heart disease. And my own DH nearly died when his sinus infection entered his blood stream and put him into septic shock. He ended up with a pacemaker due to congestive heart failure at the age of 47. So we don't take sinus problems lightly around here. :rolleyes1

That is why I had to eat heavier than normal so it would not mess with my stomach and always managed to gain weight from them--but at that point my face was is so much pain I was willing to eat more to get rid of the infection

just got back from the dr..she said it sounds like an "involved sinus infection"
she gave me Ketek and tylenol with codeine...hopefully i feel better soon!
