We have a port call at nassau while on our four night cruise with disney anyone got any tips on what the shopping is like there? Or has anyone done any of the excursions?

i too would be interested in an answer to this question, as we are contemplating a 4 night bahamian for our cruise next year, but i'm thinking you might get a better response rate if you post this on the cruise thread ... they seem to have a lot of die hard bahamian fans who should be able to point you in the right direction :)

I did a Wonder and a Dream 3 night cruise...

Nassau is....ummm....in family friendly words...BORING...

As you've never been I'd get off the ship and wander around. But keep any valuables on the ship. Avoid taking a handbag at all. There is nothing to see in the SAFE areas really other than shops. I think all the excursions are way over priced. If you want to play with Dolphins then go to Sea World Discovery Cove.
There have been and continue to be muggings of people who venture out on their own and there have even been hold ups of segway tours.

DBF's friend was mugged in the Caribbean when he ventured just slightly off course because he forgot something.

The Dream cruise I stayed on the ship and ENJOYED THE PEACE AND QUIET!!! :woohoo:

Gosh thanks for the tips Queenie:rotfl2:I am thinking it may be a quick trip of the boat to have a look around and straight back on! Four day cruise is short enough I was thinking maybe a horse and carriage ride then a walk through the straw markets and back on the ship. What do u think bearing in mind we have three kids:confused3

A 4 day means a sea day right??
That means EVERYBODY is stuck on board allllll day... :crowded:

So you use the Nassau day to ride the water slide OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!!!:cool1:

AND HANG OUT IN THE SPA ON THE TOP DECKS WHILE IT'S QUIET!!!! :cool2:

And the lunch on board is an ala carte usually and I really liked it :thumbsup2
A couple hours was enough to wander the shops and even use the coupons in the 'coupon book' thing we got from the talk the night before about shopping in Nassau.

Which...yes...I would advise someone going to the shopping night presentation if you actually do want to shop. But if you don't want to buy anything it's not exciting at all :lmao:

I also advise doing the tours of the ship even with kids. The kids seemed to like it.

I've never been to Nassau with DBF but as soon as I said it to him...
Well I can't use the words he used to describe it in this forum

Using my imagination to figure out what he said, pretty sure I got it.

I think you just saved me some $$ won't bother booking a shore excursion :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for the info! Yeah we get a day at sea but I was thinking the same it will be crowded plus plus so should really take advantage of our Nassau day and use the aqua duck again and again. I am sure the kids will enjoy this!

So, somebody is on crack this week...

I'm not even going to Nassau :thumbsup2

I'm going Cayman Islands...

We did Nasau 2 years back and Queenie is right it is boring.

We did a day excursion to Atlantis. Way over priced. On the bus on the way over they did the usual pointing out the points of interest. There were 2 the only retail shop Barcardi has in the world and the hospital where Anna Nicole Smith Died (Looked like a run down house from the outside).

There was 8 of us and everyone including the kids agreed we should have stayed on the ship. DW tried to go shopping around the port area but even she the three time Olympic gold medalist shopper came back empty handed.

It really has put DW off going on a cruise on our next trip to WDW. The saving grace is that the ship and cast were fantastic and really looked after all of us.

We wandered through the markets and bought some bits and pieces, but be careful, we were 2 families travelling together and my BIL noticed a guy about 20 years old following my 15 year old DD. We all closed in on her and he walked away but if he hadn't been noticed by my BIL who was lagging behind, it might of been a different story.

I went to blue lagoon for the dolphin swim, had a great time. Atlantis if neat to stroll around and take pictures. There are underground caverns for fish. There is a charge.

We went to Nassau in May and did get off to have a look around.
Went on the glass bottomed boat tour- was ok, went passed all the mansions, Atlantis, etc, they also give you a rum punch drink. Good heart starter @ 10am.
Then we went to the straw markets to have a look and also went shopping down the main street. We did feel safe as a family of 4 (mum, dad & two teenage daughters). A quik look thru the stores and you can be finished in about 1-2hrs. We also tried the local conch fritters- different!!!
We did also go to the shopping presentation the nite b4 on the ship and found the whole thing rather amusing.- the lady presenter should have been a time share/ insurance/ car salesperson.
I think she must get a kick back from the store owners as she wants you to go shopping with her - she reckons she gets the best discounts, and also tells all us males that we need to buy our partners diamonds from the stores she quotes- yes we all want to buy diamonds from a little store that we have never heard of.
some of her sales quotes are stuck in my families heads even now
1. Start your day at store 1A - (diamond store)
2. see it, like it, BUY IT

To soften the blow of putting up with the shopping talk there are prizes dished out at the end and most attendees walk away with something.
My daughter got a color changing nail polish that she really liked and was then keen to visit the store with all the colour changing products.

I would definitely get off the boat for a look if you have never been to Nassau, also have a nice cocktail at Hard Rock before returning to the ship
