Anyone sell on Amazon?

I had a bunch of barely used or brand new DVDs to sell and after some unsuccessful attempts on CL and Facebook garage sales, I signed up as a seller on Amazon and sold 5 out of the 6 in one day :thumbsup2

One question though... I am not using Amazon to store my items, just selling them myself. They set the shipping price at $2.98 but it cost more than that to ship (most were just $.60-.75 more but one was over $5!). Is there a way I can change this?

Any other advice you can offer is appreciated for this newbie! :)

No, but if it was DVDs, they can be sent via Media Mail through USPS. That is generally much cheaper than First Class.

Nope, but if you plan to sell a lot I highly recommend getting a postal scale. I think you can probably get one for $16 on ebay.

Then you can print shipping labels from home. This is good because you can get free delivery confirmation on 1st class or priority mail. And it's only .19 for other classes of mail (media mail or parcel post).

Thanks!

I looked into the media mail option on usps.com but thought DVDs didn't qualify. I'm not sure how much more I will sell, but getting a scale is definitely a good idea if I keep up with it :thumbsup2

I sold that free DVD I got from Disney Rewards, plus a bunch of ER Seasons that a friend gave me, so even with the discrepancy in postage, it was free $$ for the Orlando fund :goodvibes

Yes, media mail is any media. Books, DVDs, CDs, etc.

DVDs can go first class for less than media and should cost no more than about $2.00...I'm wondering why yours cost more than $2.98?

Some were multi disk sets (ER). But I do agree for single DVDs first class is better. Moves faster through the mail system so less chance for damage. If you ship media mail, give items enough cushioning...the postal service can be pretty rough on items.

Yeah, I'm guessing it's those multi-disk sets that got me. One cost $5.35 to ship! I actually lost money on that one after the Amazon fees :(

The trick is to set your prices high enough to cover any difference in shipping fees. I sold some textbooks. I recycled the packaging from items I had received so I didn't pay anything for shipping envelopes or boxes or bubble wrap. I think I got the packaging tape free with a Staples deal. :thumbsup2

Media mail is great. If a buyer were to request that you ship by another method, I believe there's an option to charge more for that. Choosing it yourself is up to you, but I don't think you can charge more. If you spend more time reading on the Amazon Seller pages and forums, I'm sure you're find the information you seek.

I tried to sell some books on Amazon but so many people have theirs listed for 1 cent so I can't match that. How do they make any money on that? Even using media mail to ship, my books often cost the entire $3.99 to ship - a heavier book cost $5.00 so I can't see anyone would bother selling anything for a penny???

I sell books online, and you just have to factor it into your price. I have to evaluate whether I can sell at the going rate and still make money. I have definately lost money on several, as mine are textbooks and all heavy.

The bigger sellers are probably Pro Merchant subscribers and have the .99 fee waived. A lot of them also ship by smartmail or something like that so I don't think they pay the same amount you would to ship the item.

Oh..makes sense..you'd think their system would be smart enough to recognize box sets, etc and give you extra on shipping. Ebay does that also..maximum for certain items. Then you just need to build the additional shipping cost in your sale price.
