I have two that were DH's mom and grandma's. We have used them once in 15 years.

Wondering how silver is selling these days. He has no attachment to it.

Is it silver plate or sterling silver? That will make a difference.

We have a coin and gold shop in my town and I took some old gold jewelry. Got to talking to the lady and she told me if I had any sterling silver flatware they're going for 2k/set. This was just last month.

! I bet my MIL wouldn't care if I sold her mother's flatware if we could get that kind of money for it. She gave it to us because she never used it, and now WE never use it.

Silver plate will be worth around $100 a set IF you can get anyone to buy it.

I just sold a set of Sterling for $2500 to a coin shop for melt value. I bought it at a garage sale......

Take it to a reputable local jeweler that handles estates and see what they will offer you. Replacements Limited does not pay anywhere near what they charge.

You have to figure out if it is worth more melted or as a set -- if it is sterling.

Also, do you think you would be sorry if you don't have them to give to your child(ren) once they are adults.

Sterling silver has become to expensive that most can't/don't purchase it. Would you want your child to have it for when they have a family.

My family's sterling flatwear is engraved-no way I'd sell to melt down:scared1:

As I said, we have used one of the sets once in 15 years...

I really don't think my son would care... we are not very formal people and live in a small town in rural NC.

I think he would appreciate the memories of a FABULOUS vacation more than a set of silver that stays in a box. He was 3 when my dear mother-in-law and granny Kat passed away.

I am laughing because dear sweet Marilyn would have said, "Take the money and RUN"!!!!

My mother sold her set last September. She got $4800.00. She went to a place that was holding a SELL GOLD sale. They originally wanted to give her $3000.00. She said no. He made a couple of calls and then offered the $4800.00.

So my suggestion is to get some quotes before you sell it to the first person. It may be worth a lot more than you think.

It depends on the pattern, too. Some are much more collectible.
