Anyone seen Mary Poppins on Broadway? Need opinions, please

My mom and I are thinking about taking my nieces, 10 and 7, to NYC to see Mary Poppins.

The girls' other grandmother (their dad's mom) has seen it twice and says the girls will probably not enjoy it.

I have no clue. They seemed to love the movie, but I know that the show is often a little bit different from the movie.

Anyway, I'm open to all opinions. Thanks!

The first act is very talky. I dozed. The whole "Jolly Holiday" sequence (the part in the movie where there is live action mixed with animation) is quite disappointing.

The second act is terrific. That's where they pull out the special effects (going up the banister, flying, etc.) The Step in Time number is thrilling.

So, if you can keep them awake during the first act, they will leave loving the show.

Have they seen Lion King? It is a lot better. If you check the actual ticket website, they are probably not sold out, even though lots of the scalper sites say they are.

Thanks! Yeah, the 7 year old might have a tough time during the first act. Patience is not her strong suit

I saw it in Chicago and personally thought it might be tedious for kids (although I loved it). But interestingly enough, although I saw many parents leave after the first act of Lion King during the several times i saw it, no one left "Mary Poppins" and the kids sitting near us seemed engaged. That surprised me. The play is sort of like a merging of the movie and the books. The upside down dancing and Mary flying are amazing! I would say this one is more suitable for kids than Lion King, but take that as a relative term...I really think both are better for adults.

I actually liked Shrek quite a bit, more than I had expected to.It was very funny. I also enjoyed Mary Poppins but I would have liked it to have be truer to the movie for my own childhood nostalgia. The children around me seemed to be enjoying it.

I would do Little Mermaid (before August 30th) than Mary Poppins. My DD (8 at the time) got scared when the toys got larger and went after the kids for abusing them. It kind of freaked her out.

I also heard really great things about Shrek from my doctor.

Mary Poppins is good, but The Little Mermaid is better, and I think the kids would enjoy it better. It closes in August, so I would take advantage while it's still there.

My kids both LOVED Mary Poppins at ages 7 & 8 and they have also seen The Lion King twice and LOVED it as well. But they do see alot of Broadway, theater, concerts, etc so they may also help them.

My DD (11) and I just saw Mary Poppins 2 weeks ago and we thought it was great! She really enjoyed the Supercalif, etc and Step in Time numbers. How the cast can sing the Supercalif song forward and backward, doing the hand motions is beyond me! She loved the statues that came to life. I thought how they handled the magical transformations regarding the sets was quite good. This was her first broadway play (she saw Lion King at age 5 and doesn’t remember much from it). I didn’t think the first act was boring at all and I like the mix with the old and new stuff. No one left the play around me at all and there was a lot of kids, and younger than my DD. I can see why it opened to rave reviews.

Just remember that if you see any of the Disney shows, there are big vinyl cushions (boosters) provided for free that help the little ones see better. Ask the ushers where they are.

I wasn't particularly thrilled with Mary Poppins. I was at a Sunday matinee and by the middle of the 1st act the kids around me were either bored or sleeping. It didn't get any better for them in the 2nd act.

I'd suggest The Lion King over Mary Poppins, IMO.

My mom took dd8 - said it was okay, but not great (different from the movie). When dd13 was 10, she took us to see Wicked - awesome!

Our whole 5th grade went a year a go June (bunch of 9 & 10 year olds) and they loved it- they all had a great time. I took my daughter when she was 8 I believe and she enjoyed it. The Little Mermaid-not so much, she said it was babyish. We liked Shrek and LOVED Wicked and Phantom.

My nieces loved it! I really enjoyed it as well as did the other adults. I would give it a try...
