DH and I are going to NYC in December and we are trying to decide between Wicked and Avenue Q! I know that Avenue Q is pretty adult-oriented, but is it funny??

If you have seen both, which do you recommend?

I've seen both and while Avenue Q is absolutely hilarious, I would recommend Wicked if you're choosing between the two! IMO, Wicked is a wonderful musical!

DH and I saw Avenue Q not long after they won all their Tony awards.
Loved it!!! :thumbsup2
DH is not a Broadway kind of guy, but this show had him rolling with laughter. :rotfl:
Yes, it is quite raunchy...........very adult oriented. But also hilarious. If you go, keep an open mind. I can definately see people getting offended by some of the subject matter---racism, sex, homosexuality, they pretty much skewer everything.

If you can't handle puppets engaging in adult situations (drinking, sex) then don't go.
If it were a movie, it would probably get the same treatment and rating that Team America received.

I have never laughed as hard at anything as I did during Avenue Q. I would definately go see it over Wicked.

I've seen both and loved both. Wicked would definitely be my choice though. :thumbsup2

Well...Wicked is doing its second national tour, so the chances of seeing it near you are pretty good. Avenue Q is under exclusive contract to NYC and Vegas...so, you won't be able to see it on tour for a LONG time. That fact alone would make me choose Avenue Q.

PS...Thanks a LOT!! ;) Now, "Everyone's a little bit racist" is running thru my head!!

I saw both and felt Avenue Q was the best musical I've seen in years - probably the funniest musical I've ever been to. While I enjoyed the visual spectacle of Wicked and about half the songs, I felt the show really dragged in few places.

However, there is a bit of a risk factor. Some people just don't like Avenue Q. They never "get" the basic premise. What I would strongly recommend is that you borrow or even buy the Avenue Q cast album. If you totally enjoy it - go see the show. If not see Wicked.

Good point! We have seen a few Broadway shows when they come to Louisville, so I know we are sometimes on the touring circuit.

I think we would really like it. DH and I both have really dark senses of humor. In fact - what set this whole debate off - I just heard "The Internet is for Porn" for the first time and was laughing my head off!! :lmao:

I loved both, but be prepared...you really will see puppets doing things you never wanted to see them do.

I believe I heard on Sirius Radio a month or so ago that Q was closing in Vegas. Didn't translate well in the 90 minute one-act format. so it may be on tour sooner than anticiapted if true.

While I haven't seen Q, I am familiar with the music (which is hysterical as long as you're not easily offended).

Having said that, personally I'd recommend Wicked, especially if you enjoy staging and subtle dialog. The Evita takeoff was excellent if you knew that show.
