Anyone see Coraline yet?

Dh's co-worker went to the premier last night in Portland. I'll have to ask him how she liked it.

I think will go see it sometime this weekend.

I just read a review of it in the local paper. It got a great review; however, it might be a bit scary for some children. (I didn't see if your ticker mentions the age of your DD...)

I'm also excited to see it, but if your kids are very young, you might want to wait a while. Coraline is the only book I've ever read that I said I would be uncomfortable givin to my young children to read. DH said that was silly of me, then after he read the book he agreed.

my DS read the book years ago and really wants to see the movie, but none of his friends want to go, say it's "lame" (Freshman,,,sheesh)so I offered to take him to a matinee at a theater in another town...so he wouldn't be "seen" with his mother, lol...but so far he hasn't decided. I'll let him know the reviews are good, maybe that will sway him.

Dh talked with his coworker who saw the premier in Portland last night.

She said it was great, that EVERY kid between 12-18 should see it. She said that it would show them that their parents are not so bad, lol.

She also said that you should NOT take any kids under the age of 12 to the movie.

It has a PG rating, but it maybe should have been PG-13? My 6yo will not be seeing it.

I didn't realize it was supposed to be THAT scary. My 4 year old has been asking to see it and I hadn't really given a second thought to it - we see all the "kid" movies without too many problems (unless you count paying to see Space Chimps as a problem ) but I don't want to give her nightmares.

I'm really interested in seeing this in 3-d. I wish that I could get DS to go see it with me but he wants to see The Wrestler. He doesn't mind being seen with me if I agree to take him to an R-rated movie. Right.

My DD's are 11 and 7. I'll have to think about whether I want to take them or not. Especially since 3-D movies are so expensive! In terms of the "scare" factor, I think DD7 will probably be ok. She has seen things like the Narnia movies, Journey to Center of Earth, Harry Potter and Pirates movies (on tv), etc. Having an older sister has made her grow up a little faster, as she wants to do EVERYTHING her sister does She is actually quite a mature, precocious little girl, so she may be ok, especially if she knows in advance that there are some scary parts.

Sarah, thanks for the recommendation to read the book--we already bought a version of the story at Wal-Mart last week. Now, we just need to read it! Have you started reading to your "little one" yet? It's never too early to start reading to them!

Just thought I would let you guys know what I thought after seeing Coraline. This movie was realy scary for a PG rated movie. We had a little girl around 6 sitting behind us and she was teriffied.

Some of the bad parts:
Doll being taken apart, cut open, pulled the stuffing out, and this was just the 1st 5 minutes!
Doll being burned
Other Mothers button eyes being pulled out
scary ghost children hidding under a blanket
2 headed people trying to grab Coraline.
Other mother eating bugs
Wibey (is that his name?) Being headless and hung from a pole!
Other mother (she was just plain scary looking!) and her skelitin/robot body
Way to scary for anyone under 10 (maybe more depending on the child)
Good Parts:
Coraline was such a cutie!
It teaches a good lesson
It was thrilling for some people (scary for others)
Ummm... cool clay people?

Thats all I've got. Just thought I would worn you guys that this movie is a lot creepier then the trailers make it seam. I liked it but for some younger kids it could be realy scary!

Taking my 10 Y.O. this afternoon. She has seen all the Harry Potter films. Can't imagine it is worse than that

that is what I am wondering, my girls have seen all HP's all Pirates, Nightmare before xmas, and probably a lot more than they should - like Forensic Files, etc.

Well, I haven't seen the movie, but the book is about this girl who finds a doorway to another world. In there is a replacement mother and father, who are always there for her and listen to her...and all she has to do to stay with them forever is to let them rip out her eyes and replace them with buttons. Also, there was this walking hand....this incredibly disturbing walking hand. And well, other stuff. Point being is that I found the book dark and disturbing. In HP there is evil, but it is easily defineable and everyone knows where and what it is. Here the evil is in your own home, and it's your parents.

Have you ever read anything by Neil Gaiman? I'd read a note scribbled on a napkin if it was written by him, but he is not a children's writer. This is an adult fairy tale that, because it is in essence a fairy tale, has been mistakenly marketed to children. This is the man who once wrote personalized Christmas cards with a short story about how Santa was really just this poor sap imprisoned by the elves and forced to work through all eternity.
