....And before it was the Disney Inn it was the Disney Golf Resort! No one wanted to stay there back then becasue it was the only resort not on the monorail - Poly and CR were the other two. The Gold Resort was always available. LOL
Figured Disney changed it and refurbished it to the Disney Inn in hopes of drawing more folks. It always had really nice large rooms, many with a sitting area.
The orginal resort does still exists - it is where the Mickey head shaped pool is
Back around 1993, I worked as a mousekeeper. My home resort was BC, but occasionally we got shipped out to work other resorts where help was needed. So, one day I found myself at the Disney Inn - I got to clean their signature suite. I don't remember what it was called, but what I do remember was that it was decorated like the dwarves' cottage in Snow White, down to the murals on the wall. All the wood was very dark & it was a very cool (if large!) room to clean. One of my fave memories from cleaning rooms!
Yep, stayed there when it was the Golf Resort AND the Disney Inn. When I was about 8 my parents went to dinner together and left me back at the room. I watched TV for about 10 minutes and then I grabbed my park pass, took a bus to the TTC (you could do that back then) and then the monorail to the MK. I rode Space Mountain once and went back to the room.
Ahhhh... those were the days. That was my memory of the Golf Resort/Disney Inn!
I think the main hotel building is still there, the Mickey head pool is still the main pool at SOG and there is also a kiddie pool and a stream w/a watermill/waterwheel by the pool. The rooms are quite large in the older wing of SOG.
The so-called old wing of Shades of Green is the original Disney Inn. It wasn't torn down. The lobby has been remodeled and a wing of rooms was added. It's a beautiful tranquil resort. I would have loved to have seen the Snow White suite. The suites are decorated like nice normal rooms now.
My DH and DD stayed at the Disney Inn in 1993 on our very first trip as a family to WDW. I knew absolutely nothing about WDW resorts and thought because it had the word "Disney" in it, that had to be the best resort on property. It was okay but definately not worth the $180 a night we paid.
If I only knew then what I know now!
I stayed there back in 1987. We liked it alot with the Mickey head shaped pool. I remember the flowers around the hotel were gorgeous and we had a 1st floor room with a patio looking out across the golf course. I remember small bunny rabbits coming and looking in the sliding glass door every morning on the patio. It was very quiet but still close to the MK.
In 1993 or 1994 DH and I were planning our second trip to Disney. We decided to stay at the Disney Inn because of the great reviews and the large rooms. Just as we were ready to book it we found out that it had been turned over to the military, so we had to find someplace else.
We ended up in a 'club suite' at the Village Resort. That area went by a number of different names and eventually became part of Disney Institute. The resort included the treehouses that can still be seen from the boat between PO and DTD.
