Anyone Regret Giving Up Unlimited Data Plan?

I am grandfathered on AT&T with unlimited data but I'm considering dropping it for the 10GB family share plan. I have 4 iPhones on my plan and I pay for the data separately. My monthly bill is about $220/month but would be around $150 with the new plan. I checked our historical usage and while I do use the most data on the family plan, we have never broken 8gb total in any given month. I am thinking of switching. Anyone make the switch? Anyone regret giving up their unlimited data?

How timely! I've been checking this out today and wondering the same thing! I'll be watching...........:listen: (and listening)

I switched from unlimited to the 10GB. No regrets. Never even get close to the 10GB. I was paying $200 before for 3 lines. I am paying $150 now with taxes. No regrets here but it was difficult to actually bite the bullet and get rid of unlimited.

this is my dilemma. I pay about $185-$190 for 2 iPhones (one is grandfathered in with unlimited data) and a regular no frills cell phone with just talk and text. So 3 line but one without data. The one my mom uses is the no frills phone but she'd like a smart phone to be able get better quality pics and take better quality pictures. These new shared plans would allow us to pay less and get her a smart phone. I'm debating but I think we may do it. I want to get her an iPhone since she has an iPad and will be more familiar with it.

We were grandfathered in until we happened to use a lot of data one month and received notification that in the future if we used that much we would be 'throttled,' meaning once you get past a certain amount of data it drops to really really slow speeds. We dropped them immediately and haven't looked back.

I am in the same situation, 2 Iphones grandfathered in to unlimited with occasional throttling at 6 G a month and one old style for phone with no data. I want to upgrade phones as soon as my contract is up and with every new plan I have to pay the whole cost of the phone or add $25 to $20 per month PER PHONE to my bill so it brings the costs way up from where we are.

So we haven't done anything yet.

My husband and I both have smart phones. The third line is for my aunt who takes care of my kids while I am at work. It's a basic phone with only talk and text and the only reason text is on there is because of the family plan. She uses maybe 2 minutes a month but it's safer for her to have it than not. She is in her 70's. She wouldn't even know what to do with a smart phone.

My husband and I are also in the process of deciding if we want to cancel completely with AT&T and go with a no contract company like boost mobile or some other company like that.

Our reception with AT&T at our house is non existent. That's one of our major reasons for wanting to change providers.

As far as regretting changing to limited data from unlimited, no complaints here.

We switched and have said a ton of money in the 4 months we did. AT&T will give you your historical data plan usage and we never came close to 10GB so we changed. We have went over once (DS18 got a tablet for Christmas and forgot to turn his hotspot off!!!) They charged us $15 for the additional data, and it was still a smaller bill than we were used to.

I made the switch stating with my new billing cycle that starts on Thursday.

We are with Verizon and made the switch from unlimited to their family share plan and it has worked well for us. We haven't even come close to using all the data, except for one month in which DD was traveling and used a bunch. And when we are at home, we all use WiFi to save on data.

No regrets. DH and I were unlimited but DS14 was on a 2gb plan. I bet you can't guess who of the three used the most data. :rotfl2: Now we have 10gbs for the 3 of us. Patterns haven't changed.... DS still uses the same amount but it costs less and it is less stress for all parties.

4 Iphones and gave up 2 unlimited data plans. No regrets, history showed that we never went over 6gb of usage.

No regrets whatsoever - and I thought we would NEVER switch from being grandfathered.

We had 2 iphones that were grandfathered and and 1 dumb phone. NOW we have 3 smart phones and an iPad Air for almost exactly the same price as before (we took the 10 GB plan).

Sure I've been a little more pro-active in monitoring our data since making the switch. However, we've barely made it to 6 GB for all. Plus we will no longer get threatened with being throttled.

A must-have is the AT&T app. It's AMAZING being able to keep track and turn off data for certain phones if we have to.

Very happy. :)

We've been debating this too. Our history shows the 10g wouldn't be enough for 4 smartphone users so they upped it to 15, which wasn't near the savings. We've only been throttled once since signing up. Always keeping options open

Well, guess I'll be the oddball. My DH bought me an Iphone 5s with a new plan for Christmas. I was furious! The ATT rep assured him that I never went over 2g of data. This was true, but apparently my old Iphone used less data, so with the new phone I was over my 2g in less than 2 weeks. It took me about 6 weeks and a lot of trouble to get my old plan reinstated. On the up side, every time I had to call and explain my problem to someone new, they felt sorry for me and gave me another monthly bill credit. So, my bill has been really low since February.

I like unlimited data. I never switch over to wifi. I just don't want to have to think about it.

If you have an ancient phone and will be upgrading your phone, I would see how much data you use with the new phone before switching.

I'd never give up my unlimited data. I use 12-15G min. Per month. Some mild throttling but I've never gotten a notice. They do try to get me to change my data plan all the time.

Whoa, is that for one phone?

When my husband upgraded his iphone his data went skyhigh within days and would've stayed there if we didn't find out what was the cause was. Come to find out it was certain data-hogging apps...apps that his old phone didn't have access to. That was with the unlimited plan. Once we took care of those apps, our data went back down to where it was with the old phone.

I agree that switching isn't for everyone. Some people live in rural areas and don't have access to wi-fi. For others the unlimited actually comes out cheaper...

I used to have unlimited data on Verizon. I switched off to another company, and therefore giving up. The money I am saving is well worth it. For my own personal data habits, I do not miss it. I am using probably 250mb or so a month, no need for unlimited. I don't stream a lot of video or music or anything.

This kind of confuses me. The phones are designed to switch back and forth on their own. Turn WiFi on and when there's WiFi, you have WiFi, when there's not the phone will drop over to LTE or 4G. There's no need to switch back and forth. (the exception being your network going out and the phone trying to locate it)

I have steadfastly guarded DH's unlimited but after looking at our history we have three iPhones that use less than 2GBs a month combined. That includes a teenager, lol! This is probably due to living in a large city and having access to WiFi just about anywhere we go. There are a few exceptions and in those instances we'd like to use our phones as hot spot for ipads or laptops. We can't do that with our current plan. We're clearly overpaying for what we have so we're going to make the jump I think.
