We are becoming increasingly unhappy with our bank for several reasons. DH and i talked it over, and we are ready to make a change. The problem is, we really have no idea where to put our money. If you really like your bank, can you tell me why?

I switched to Publix Employees Fed Credit Union over a year ago, and have LOVED it. While I do not have access to a local bank( I mail any deposits I have in), I have NEVER had any problems. We had an incident with a bounced check(not our fault..long story) and we only payed $25 even though 6 things bounced...and they payed the check too, so no other fees were incurred.

Honestly, I would NEVER go back to a regular acct..I have been SUPER happy with my CU

I'll second a joining a credit union. They have much lower fees, as well as better loan rates than a bank. I love ours and the staff there are very friendly and helpful. Their checking account also has no monthly fees while our local banks charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 a month to have a checking account.

I love my credit union. It was originally open to only FP&L employees and family, but it's open to any one.

and long before this whole government act to allow you to opt out of overdraft, i was able to place it on my account.
I don't have to be at my credit union, just a "sister union" to make deposits and withdrawls.
Anything deposited, checks, cash, atm or inside are available immediately, no matter the amount.
I can tranfer with my accounts, or to another account instantly. Over the phone or on the internet.
The bill pay feature is great.
I can speak to a real person, without being on hold for hours.

Dax: does your credit union do the sister banks?? My branch is only in ft lauderdale, but no problems with using other credit unions in Orlando, Dallas, Indiana, California. I can call or go online and find these branches with just a zip code.

Yup. Love our credit union. 4% interest on out checking and no PMI on our mortgage re-fi that they did FREE (no closing costs and they paid the appraisal fee) found them at checkingfinder.com

i like my bank, but LOVE the credit union! I sent the boyfriend over there yesterday for some low interest state gov't heat pump program he was intersted in, and he ended up refinancing his new car while he was there...they knocked off almost 3 interest points off his original financing, and it also has shorter loan term... it ends up saving a few thousand at the very least

long story short, I think they have fantastic loan programs, I love their customer service impeccable, and I love that a real person that answers the phone.

and the dog loves them too. they have nice quality dog biscuit treats in the drive thru :lmao:

Get thee to a credit union...now.:thumbsup2

Right now, banks are just in it for the profit...or to try to recoup from the bad loans they have made.

Credit unions take care of their customers, pure and simple.

I've been with the same credit union for over 20 years. Both of my daughters (now grown up) have dealt with banks, and all they got were hassles and undeserved overdraft fees. They are now with credit unions.

And you should be too.

Not to beat a dead horse, but we also love our local federal credit union! We've been customers for over 15 years and love the awesome rates and service. I can't see the point of a McBank anymore.

Not that I know of...the main branch is in Lakeland, and while inconvenient, I can get there within 45min if need be..

Thanks everyone,
My husband is a state employee, but, until recently, there wasn't a branch near us. Now, there is one about 15 miles away. We debated about joining at first, but I think we are convinced now. Thanks again for helping to point us in the right direction :)

I know you already made up your mind, but yep! Do it.

Huge plus here -- they look after you in ways our bank didn't. Someone lifted my credit union CC number somehow and charged something in a different state. The credit union called me and said something like, "Hey, I know via the action on your card that you were shopping today in town, but a charge came up a few hours later from Iowa (or some other state far from PA; can't remember now). We wanted to make sure it was legit before we took action."

Made me feel a whole lot safer.

Navy Federal Credit Union for the last 30 years. Have also had several regular bank accounts. ALL the banks folded or got taken over and there were always hefty minimum charges, etc. Note that not all credit unions are equal either. If you have family in the service or who are a member, they can help you join NFCU. It's the best in my opinion.

Another vote for a credit union. I belong to two, one of which (my main one, the other is for vacation fund) does not have a local office. However, I use direct deposit, online banking and the credit unions around here have an agreement and allow use of each others' MAC machines without fees. They also reimburse up to $3.00 a month if I need to use a machine out of network. I get free checks, a very low interest CC (rarely use, but it is available) and options for low interest loans. The customer service has been excellent!

If you are able to join USAA, They are a great bank, they are for military members active, reserve, retired, and children only. They have also started allowing Veterans that have served become member's too! The only thing, is that they are only opened to the parents and children of the USAA member. So if you have a parent that was eligible I'd take them up on the offers, they offer great rates on car insurance, credit cards and great reward points:yay:.

CU are the way to go now!! If you know some one military they can "sponsor" you as a friend/ relative for NFCU!

I joined a credit union 9 years ago and I've never been happier. I pay no fees, pay all my bills (and other people) through my on-line banking, I have a checking, savings and a Christmas Club (which, to me, is a brilliant concept!) account through them. I find that credit unions really seem to care about their members more than a bank does.
I also have 2 on-line savings accounts through Ing. One is my vacation fund and another is a long term savings account. They earn a slightly higher interest rate than my regular savings (which I only really use for those "oops" moments like, I went a little over budget on groceries this week...).
DBF laughs at me because my money is all over the place...

I've had my primary account at a local federal credit union for about six years. At that time, the nearest branch was about 20 miles away. They opened one within about five miles two years or so ago. :)

One of the things I really like is that they have a stable, friendly staff. The tellers actually stay in one location for as long as they like. In the case of the new branch, two have been there since it opened, as have the manager and assistant manager. The others have migrated from other banks or credit unions in the past 18 months or so. It's nice to be more than an account number! :goodvibes

You may find that you want to use other financial institutions for some transactions. Sometimes you'll find a great CD rate elsewhere--things like that.

I LOVE my credit union. Honestly, I can't understand why people use banks, they charge high fees, higher interest loans and generally have poor customer service. I can understand if you have a need for million dollar loans for large business, but for everyday people, cu's are the best.

The reason they are so good is they work for the people. Their money doesn't go to pay shareholders, the account holders are the shareholders! They aren't supporting big fancy corporate offices and they seem to use common sense. They pretty much offer everything a bank does and they are able to make decisions in short amounts of time.

I had our home loan with them and they called me a couple of years ago and pointed out that I could save money by refinancing. They refinanced my house, no points, no fees, no appraisal, oour closing costs were under $100 to have our title company run a new title report on the house. They didn't have to call me, but that's the difference. They care about their customers, not just the bottom line.

Incidentally, we have a local community the experienced a landslide problem. The local government (that approved the subdivision & ignored geological surveyor warnings) got sued by about 200 homeowners, the homeowners won. But they ended up with about 30 cents on the dollar for their home values. About 20 homeowners that had financed with our credit union were sent a letter telling them their mortgages had been forgiven, with only 1 string attached. They were to take the 30% money they had received, purchase a new home and seek financing thru the credit union. How's that for caring about customers?!

Most credit unions have cash machine cards or debit cards that work on the Pacific Access member system. You can use other credit union cash machines across the country with no charge. So it makes it comparable to using a large national bank.:thumbsup2

couldn't be happier with my Credit Union.... Banks on the other hand are scummy bottom feeders

I LOVE Publix Credit Union. I've had an account since before I could remember and they are still my main bank even though I no longer live in a state where they have a local branch.

I have joined a couple credit unions and an actual bank since moving but none seem to compare!
