Anyone out there ever go to a pagent for children?

This is inspired by the Showbiz Mom's thread---

Has anyone ever attended one of these pagents?

If so, are they really like they are portrayed on this show? I mean do little children have tans and do the mothers give them sugar to make them peppy on stage? Do little girls get their hair set in hot rollers for every pagent? Do moms really get catty like the Tye lady?

What's the skinny on these things? And is Emilee's mom (on the show) a fair portrayal of the pagent moms out there in the real world?

I refuse to attend them because I'm totally against them. However, I have had the unfortunate exp of being in a hotel when a competition was going on, and it seemed to line up with the experiences show with Emily on that show.

ALSO - this Bravo show is not the first to do insider looks at child pageants, and things were portrayed the same way in those other shows as well... So I have doubt that for the most part they are like that. Though there are exceptions to every rule, I have a hard time with ANY parent that does child pageants on a regular basis... regardless of how they may speak to their child about it. Does that make sense?

DD did pageants for about 3 years starting when she was 2. . Funny thing was the more a pageant stressed they were low key/no makeup/no "big" hair" the more likely a girl fixed up like that would win. I think it was because they stood from the others.
Haaiian Tropics was the worst in that reguard. They "claimed" to deduct points for big hair, inappropriate clothing and makeup. However all the winners had "big" hair lots of makeup and worn bikini's as their tropical wear.

I know of one line that disqualified a 2yr state winner for wearing a hair piece. However they didn't have much success in GA, so they are no longer in the state.



DH witnessed (luckily we were in the back) a mother go nuts on the judges when DD won a pageant. The mother was screaming that she knew her DD's dress was much more expensive than my DD's so her DD should have won. At them same pageant a mom had a fit because her daugher got low marks for too much makeup. The 3yr old had on bright blue eyeshadow.

It didn't take long to realize that most of them are over the top, no matter how many times their liturature said the oppisiste. We continued to do one local line that is a part of the Miss GA (as in miss American) scollarship fund, until about 18 months ago. Karate has kept us busy. DD ask on occasion to start doing them again. I told her that when I have time I will sell all her pageant wear that is too small...we have 3 dresses (sz2 sz3 and sz4, and a couple of other outfits (like her tropical wear) to sell. She can either keep the money or spend it on pageant wear if she really wants to get back into them.

Another strange trend in pageants is that the younger girls (under age 10) wear more make-up, bigger hair and more expensive dresses. If DD really wants to get involved again I had rather wait until she is 10.

A little late to the discussion, but.....

I am very anti little girl pageant. IMO there should be an age restriction on pageants period....say 16 and older when the girl can actually make the decision for herself. These "little miss such and such" are nothing but a money maker for pagent organizers. Dress these girls up in gowns with more make-up than a grown woman wears......for what??? A trophy bigger than they are?

I watched the Stage Mom show on Bravo the other night and the parts about Emilee and her mother turned my stomach. Granted she may be over the top, but her example should be enough to make any parent considering this for their daughter run screaming in the other direction. Her comment (in front of her daughter) about what she thought of the judges was completely inexcusable!
