I am very grateful to everyone who took the time and answered this question and helped us out with this. We have many ideas now to consider and we are grateful for your answers. Erin1700 I hope you are still observing this please respond if you see this otherwise I will send you a private message to you in a few days. Tylenol has a dye-free children tylenol for ages 2 to 100. It contains acetaminophen which is a fever reducer and pain relivier. Also Delsym has yellow dye but no red dye in it for a cough syrup it has dosage for 2 to 6 year old and it goes up to adults. I hope you can find this in your area. Again thanks everyone for your answers and time. :thumbsup2

Boy am I familiar with this topic. My daughter is allergic to Red Dye, Peanuts, apple juice and Sunflower seeds. In addition she's got a host of airborne allergies. I'm allergic to wheat. In her case, the allergies manifest as hives and rashes along with behavior issues. I'm actually trying to figure out right now if there are other food allergies. There is actually a blood test that will test for a host of food allergies that we are looking into having done.

The Red Dye is definitely the worst one to avoid. It's in everything from candy to some yogurt to Ketchup. It's also in a lot of shampoos, bath soaps and hand lotions and hair styling products.

Someone mentioned M&Ms - At WholeFoods in the bulk section they have some Faux M&Ms that use natural colorings. At Christmas they have candy canes colored with beet juice. WholeFoods is probably your best resource if you're avoiding dyes. Their company policy is not to sell anything with artifical coloring. You can usually find some great substitutions there.

There is a dye free cough syrup - I believe it's by Robitussin. It's marketed to diabetics and uses artificial sweetner instead of sugar. But it is clear.

Yep, I am still here!! I will look for that cough medicine tomorrow! Another post I found interesting is the connection with wetting the bed. My DD does this often and I wonder if it occurs on days she has had some red dye?? I will watch for this now!! Good luck to you and thanks!

DD hasbehavior issues/ADHD symtoms after ingesting food dyes. blue seems to be the worst. Yellow also affacts her. Red I didn't notice a problem, but we try to avoid all artificial flavors, colors ane preservatives with her.

I agree with the poster who suggest adding omega fatty acids. DD takes Flax seed oil and fish oil daily. It really helps.

Just wanted to let you know, this is nothing new, not some new unfounded theory. My brother was diagnosed with this allergy 30 years ago. We grew up eating mostly what would be considered "health food" because we had to avoid everything with yellow or red dyes. My brothers symptoms were hyperactivity and at one point he had hives everywhere on his body for weeks. Once taken off of the dyes, no more symptoms. He has outgrown it as an adult, though we are very used to avoiding the "bad" foods, and still pretty much do.

I remember one very wild behavior day when my son came home from pre-school shouting, "Mommy, I had food dye today!!!!" We had purposely removed food dye from his diet, they knew it and gave him M&M's anyway. His behavior was always manic when he had it. He has mostly outgrown that issue but rarely eats anything with food dye in it. He just knows it's bad for him. The preschool teachers learned the hard way as his behavior that day was off the charts, lol.(I can laugh now, then I was po'd!)
