My inlaws are in Daytona Beach are being evacuated later today. They are planning on heading towards the west coast of FL. Just wondering if anyone in FL on the west coast is being evacuated.

as far as I know, plam beach & okeechobee county (that's me) are facing mandatory evacuations now...

My best friend lives in Broward County. They are under manditory evac for anyone east of Federal Hwy, and all mobil homes regardless of location are to evac too. My friend has evac'd anyway to her dad's in Pensacola. She's on the road now!

It looks like the storm is going to trek across the state over to the west coast. Is it a good idea to leave one coast for another? I would just head inland to the middle of the state. Or even slightly north and in the middle (Ocala, Lake City, etc). Yes, I've been in h'canes used to live in FL so I'm not just saying this out of the blue. Also, a 'cane that hit in '95 on the gulf coast was so powerful (Opal) that we had 60+ mph wind in North Alabama from it! My mom had to come up from Ft Walton and ended up as far north as my house because she couldn't find a hotel room.

Yes, being in GA, I remember Opal very well too. I can remember thinking was house was going to blow away while my DH and DD slept through it.

OMG.. I had forgotten about Opal.. That was crazy. It was then that I realized why my mother always freaked out when a hurricane hit the panhandle and AL/MS Gulf Coast. If that thing has some speed when it hits land, we always got heavy rains, thunderstorms, and tornadoes in N. AL.
