Hi all, DH just put in for a promotion at work. The job would be located in Spartanburg! I've never lived anywhere but Buffalo my entire life and boy am I ready for a change. We've been talking about going south for years but of course it never seems like the right time to make such a big move. By him applying for this job we won't have a choice...we'll have to move which is just what we need.

What do you like about the area? Where are the good neighborhoods? How are the schools?

I was born and raised in Cowpens, about 35 min from the center of Spartanburg. It was the big city to us back then lol! I live about an hour south of there now, but still have family in Cowpens that can provide current information if you get the job. I left the area about 11 yrs ago, but things haven't changed that much. Spartanburg County has 7 school districts, with 7 getting the bulk of the downtown area and 6 the remainder. District 7 has always had a very bad rep because of the housing projects it serves, but I had friends whose kids graduated from Spartanburg HS and they were happy with the education their kids received. The other districts (1-5) are more rural. Don't let the national school rankings scare you, every district, even in the same county, is very different from the next. Neighborhoods depends on what type of area you're looking for, small town, city, rural, subdivision, acres, etc. I was stationed outside Atlantic City for 6 yrs and the weather is similar. It just gets warm earlier in the spring and stays warm longer in the fall. Not sure how hot it gets in Buffalo in the summer, but upstate SC can hit 100+ though 90's are much more common. This winter hasn't been bad at all. My mom lives with my sis in central NJ and we've been running 10-20 degrees colder all winter. Now that I think about it, she says they didn't have summer this year and we sure did lol. Humidity is usually pretty high in the summer, but not as high as FL. Snow happens maybe once, without the accumulations you get up there, ice is more common. The blizzard that just hit most of the country didn't bother us. Spartanburg got rain, Chesnee, which is in the county but a little north, got maybe 1-2" and it didn't last long. Nobody down here can drive in snow and the entire state panics at the first forecast lol. Charlotte, NC is a little over an hour north and Greenville, SC is 10-45 min south, depending on where you live. There are airports in both cities but I think Greenville has more carriers. Carowinds is an amusement park with a decent kiddie section about an hour from Spartanburg, it has a water park included with admission. The Disney Catalog distribution center is in Jonesville, about 30-60 min, and their store has great prices! It's only an 8-9 hour drive to Orlando!

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking for a suburban feel. I'm not really interested in city living, but I don't want it to take more than 15 minutes to drive to the grocery store or post office either :)

I'm most interested in the best schools in the area...that's important to me. It looks like District 2 seems pretty good. It says they are serving Boiling Springs. The housing seems really reasonable...almost too good to be true.

I guess I shouldn't be getting my hopes up until DH actually gets the job.
