Anyone know what this pain could be

OK - silly question, but I was wondering if anyone knows what could cause excrutiating pain along one side of my thumbnail. It feels almost like a really bad hangnail, but it's not.

Did you peel an orange with your nails? Seriously, when something gets under there it really hurts.
