Hi. I went over to my friends last night for some cocktails. I brought a bottle of premade Cosmopolitans. My friend said she had had 2 Cosmos at a party about 3 years ago and was extremely sick that night and the next day...vomiting, headache, running to the bathroom if you knwo what I mean. Anyway, she thought it was a fluke and wanted to have a Cosmo last night:scared1: I thought she was nuts but it was her call. So, she had about 1 and 1/2 drinks and then switched to beers(maybe 2) She is sick as a dog today. Same symptoms as last time. She drinks wine and beer with no problems. Do you think it's just something in the Cosmo or maybe just vodka?? No big deal either way. She said now she knows she cannot drink Cosmos because it's to much of a coincidence to happen twice. Funny thing is as she was telling me about how sick she got at her reunion, I got freaked out and poured out the rest of my Cosmo:woohoo: I'm fine today, lol.

PS I know the obvious answer is she has a massive hangover but it just seems so weird to me that it only happens with this particular drink and after only 1 or 2:confused:

Can she drink other vodka drinks?

She may be allergic to the grain in vodka.

Or the cranberries.

I know I am allergic to licorice and anything in that family, and I can't have licorice flavored liquors.

Hmmmm....

I can think of three things...

1. she is allergic to one or more of the ingredients in that type of drink

2. she is too old to drink that much, her system is telling her to knock it off.

3. she is a wuss.:lmao:

switch to RUM!!!

I vote WUSS! :thumbsup2

Seriously, I think she could just have an intolerance to something in the drink; probably the vodka. I have always had a pretty strong stomach for alcohol, but give me even one beer and I get a massive headache. I think it's the hops.

:lmao: oh believe me, she will never hear the end of this!!

I was thinking some sort of allergy also. She really didn't even appear drunk you know?? Poor thing is still feeling crappy.

maybe a reaction of some sort to the Triple Sec or the lime juice? Personally, I dislike cosmos, I think they are way too sweet. Maybe just too much sugar?

I thought people are not supposed to switch alcohols in an evening, or they get sick? :confused3 Going from vodka & triple sec to beer is switching.

Could be that it may be the mix. That stuff has every low grade ingredient.

I know she probably won't want to, but I try one that is mixed separately so you know the quality of the ingredients.

Tell her...hair of the dog !!!!!:rotfl2:

Mixing with the beer sure wasn't a good move. Just the thought of it made my stomach turn.

I get an instant, bad headache (remarkably resembling a sinus headache???) from some/most beers...after not even finishing ONE!

I also got violently, horribly ill within 20 minutes of a jello shot (made with most likely cheap vodka) TWICE 10 yrs apart.

I avoid anything with vodka in it now, 100%. Sometimes I am tempted to try a drink made with a higher quality vodka, but it just isn't worth the immediate, violent illness it may cause.

As for beer, I found online something about a chemical in beer (which also your body releases as it digests beer, or something like that)...so I tried a corona light bottle the other day and got NO HEADACHE.

I don't think it is an allergy - she would show symptoms fairly immediately after consumption. Even if the amount was small, she would show symptoms before the following morning.

Maybe the cranberries or vodka irritate her digestive tract? This one has me stumped. :confused3

I love Cosmos!

I never use the pre-made mixes as they put in too much other "crap" in them.

My recipe is 1/3 cranberry juice, 1/3 lime juice and 1/3 vodka.

As for switching drinks, that doesn't seem to bother most people. Usually when we go out we have a predinner cocktail and then wine with dinner and some people have scotch, port after. They all seem fine the next day.

Not sure what could be your friends problem (may PPs offered some good suggestions) but if I were her, I would avoid Cosmos in the future. I hope she feels better.

Didn't you know, it's :
Beer then Liquor- never sicker!
Liquor then Beer- in the clear!

By my standard her friend should have been okay :thumbsup2 :rotfl:

I have had a similar reaction to vodka drinks. I've just learned to steer clear of them. I can have one vodka drink during the night and end up sick as a dog later. I can drink rum all night and be fine. In fact, I end up with less of a hangover drinking rum than beer. I think people just have some liquors they just don't have a tolerance for. My co-worker cries when she drinks vodka...I throw up. I cry when I drink tequila...she tries to fight people. It's just in your chemistry. :)

Then it is agreed....it can't be allergies because it would be an immediate reaction then and there....

OP, sorry to have to say this...

your friend is a WUSS!!:rotfl:

pirate:

RUM?:rolleyes1

Sounds like a migraine with the headache, vomiting and tummy trouble and when something is ingested it can be full blown in minutes and can last for a few days. I get migraines all the time and some of the worst were caused by cheap booze or stuff you mix with the alcohol. I can't have any of those mixes like you describe nor cranberry cocktail juice but 100% cranberry is ok, no grenadine, no fruit punch of any kind and certainly no cheap booze. Some of the worst migraines I have ever had in my life were drink related with once being from Vodka (I can ONLY do Skyy or Belvedere) and the other Gin and amount had zero to do with it although I am sure more wasn't beter. The Gin and Tonic was the worst ever in my life, I remember lying on the floor of the car on my way home so my head wouldn't move, I now know I can ONLY do Tanqueray. Terrible...

If your friend likes a particular drink maybe she should go out and experiment with a few brands before settling with a favorite. Just recommend she try the stuff in small doses, if something she is drinking is going to cause her to get sick she would probably know in about 1/2 hour.

I do also know someone who gets violently sick from champagne with the muscles locking up and everything. The Dr said it's an allergy so I guess it could be that too. Still, from my experience, what you are describing sounds EXACTLY like a full blown migraine left to fester without medication.

I hope your friend feels better.

I would look at how the drink was made. Was it made from fresh ingredients, or was it vodka and "cosmo in a bottle" poured together? Some of the pre-made mixers are just crud, and could easily have something in them that could disagree with a person's system.

Or it's the booze. Or she's otherwise sick or pg or something.

It was the pre-made crap in a bottle:rotfl2: I cheaped out and bought that. Anyway, thanks for all the replies. She's fine today but has sworn off any and all mixed drinks forever:rotfl:

Just a thought--is she on any medication that could react with the mixes included in the Cosmo? Reason I ask is that some bars put grapefruit juice in their Cosmos as a variant on a regular Cosmo, and grapefruit juice reacts with a lot of medications.
