Anyone know how to store a wedding dress?

Way OT but to make a long story short my daughter's wedding for June of 07 looks like it will have to be postponed until 08 as the young man is in the Navy and will be deployed at that time. We just picked the dress up and it is in one of those vinyl zip bags (I told my daughter it was way too early to get her dress but did she listen??). I am wondering if keeping it in this type of bag long term would be good for the dress. If anyone has any tips, please share. Thanks!

I used to work in a bridal salon and we always told people to take the dress out of the bag, lay it out flat (if possible), as leaving it hanging will stretch the dress, and cover it with a THICK WHITE sheet or two so that light does not get to it and discolor it. I had mine lying on the bed in our guest room. If we had guests, I would hang it up while they were here and then immediately lay my dress back out on the bed as soon as they left.

i was told to store mine loosely folded with sheets of acid free colour free tissue paper between the folds

I used this site for info on storing my wedding gown. http://dept.kent.edu/museum/staff/wedding.html

Also make sure that you know exactly what the dry cleaners is going to do and get it in writing. I asked all the questions and gave it to the cleaners and then they went against what they said they were going to do and sent it to one of those sealed box companys that I wanted to avoid. They thought it was better for the dress. I was very angry but I didnt have anything that said exactly what they were supposed to do. So I opened it up and found that the dress was not clean and had to get it redone elsewhere.

David's Bridal has kits that you buy in the store with a box and shipping information. You box the dress up and ship it off...and it is taken care of for you! :) It's shipped back in a display box...very quick and easy! :thumbsup2

If you could get a storage box, that would probably be the best bet. When the wedding is over, you can use it to store her dress after it has been cleaned too.
