 I dropped the ball, I know. I should have had my puppy spayed by now. BUT she is have her first menstruation, and it's a bit messier than I thought. Any idea how long it will last? I believe this is day three. Next week I will call the vet and have her surgery scheduled, so I don't want to run out and buy doggy diapers if this is going to end soon.

TIA for any information you could give me.

I thought estrus cycles ran anywhere from 7-14 days.

Since this is her first, it may not match the norm tho..I'd suspect it would be shorter than that.

I use to work for a vet and I use to hear 10-14 days, you may want to go for the "*****es britches", that's what they used to be called. Good Luck, my mom had a Springer Spaniel that she bred and I remember the mess.

10-14 days!!!! Say it ain't so? Looks like I'm off to Petco today.

Just curious. I would hope this isn't a monthly thing?

Thanks for your help. :D

I know it can last up to 2 weeks or so. I have also heard that any male dog for up to a 2 mile radius may show up at your door:eek: She may also try her best to get out. I would go ahead and call the vet to schedule her surgery. Good Luck!!

Yes, 10 - 14 days is the norm. But, because this is her first cycle, it could be different. Maybe shorter, maybe longer. I usually keep my girls away from any willing males (and they're ALL willing when they're within 5 miles of a female in heat) for at least a month and a half, especially when the girl is still a pup. It takes them awhile to learn how to snap and snarl and make the boys understand that no means no!

Good luck -- it ain't fun. And no, this doesn't happen once a month, it usually occurs every six months. Usually. Can be more time or less. And my vet will not spay during a heat cycle, we have to wait six weeks after the heat ends.....

The reason I could kick myself is that the vet did tell us that if you spay before the first heat, the chance of breast cancer goes down many, many times. Like I said, I dropped the ball on this one.

In any event, we live in an area where I never see stray dogs, and we are fenced in. Besides, my dogs only go out to do their thing, and they are back in. (Probably because we have two feet of snow in our backyard. ;) )
