I'm preg & my heart has been racing so my dr is checking thyroid - it's been checked already & it was normal if it comes back normal again she's sending me to a cardiologist who will do an EKG & she thinks most likely I'll have to take Beta Blockers for @ least the rest of the pregnancy.

ANyone have any experience with this??? Just want to get info...won't know for 1 week about the results...

Used to take Propranolol. Be warned - they can make you feel weaker, may cause dizziness and woe betide you if you stand up too fast! If prescribed at the right dose, however, you won't notice that you're even taking them.

I took this also (brand name Inderal). If the dose is low enough it is okay. I found that it didn't take much Inderal to get my heart rate to slow down but the doctor always wanted to give me so much--I ended up feeling like a zombie. They give this medication, often, to performers who have stage fright. They still feel scared but it stops of the heart racing, sweating, and jitters. It will also lower you blood pressure a bit.

I take toprol for hbp but also because my heart races. I found no side effects except I felt less nervous and more calm. I do not know what it does when you are preg. I would however check it out on the web and ask your phamacist. Better safe than sorry.

I take Atenolol for an electrical problem in my heart. Initially, it made me dizzy and tired but you soon become used to the dose. Make sure that you follow up with a good cardiologist. My electrical problem surfaced for the first time when I was pregnant and is easily managed with the Atenolol. Good luck!

I had heart problems when I was a kid, but not until I was an adult did I have to take medication for it. I had to take Atenolol for problems with my heart too. It does make you feel funny, and you do get used to it. However, according to the Dr's, once on them you will be on them for the rest of your life! I dropped some weight, actually a whole bunch, and I've been off them for a year. I was a skinny kid too, and with heart problems, maybe they just went away, or now is more manageable without mediciation.

DH was on beta blockers and they made him suicidal :scared1: I ended up on them following my last baby and felt strange but otherwise ok. I was on a crud load of meds though so it could have been any of them that made me feel off.

Yes, I did with DD. My BP and pulse were always normal, but for some reason at night when I laid down, my heart would just race. :confused3 My OB thought that maybe I had Mitral Valve Prolapse. I went to a cardiologist and had an echocardiogram, all was normal. He told me that I had to take it easy and reduce my stress level, I told him that I wasn't stressed. I guess that was his explanation for it, but I had no stress in my life.:confused3 It stopped happening after DD was born, I never had to take meds for it, but I guess every case is different depending on the frequency.

I hope all goes well for you. :grouphug:

I have mitral valve prolapse and took Tenormin (Atenolol) to control my heart rate. I took it through both pregnancies. The only possible side effect was low birth weight babies. Mine were both over 6 pounds.

I was off the Rx for a while after that but then developed high blood pressure and went back on it. It slows my pulse and prevents migraines. I feel better taking it.

I saw this thread & had to post... my Mom is on beta blockers as well insulin & some other meds... For the past few months she's had more trouble getting around.. weakness in her legs, dizzy.. even passing out twice. She's asked her Dr about it tons of times but to no avail.. Mom just mentioned the other day that she suspects its the beta blockers but that the Dr won't 'admit' to it because she wants her to stay on them..

Does that sound like symptoms caused by them.. it sounds possible from what I've read?
