Anyone just put all their pop/water in there checked luggage?

Was debating putting this in WDW Restaurant section but was not sure.

With all the talk of refillable mugs, rfid (not to be confused with the R.I.P.D.), along with the talk of getting cases of water shipped to your hotel or making a Hess stop, does anyone just throw water/pop in their suitcase and check it when you fly?

I have gone to WDW 3 times in the past 5 years. Weeklong trips. Wife and I travel light and bring all-in-sheets for midweek laundry to cut down on clothes.

The rest of the space I fill with bottled water and diet coke. 2-3 bottles a day, about 5/6 cokes for the week. We each take a bottle a day to the parks, store them in out fanny packs (while looking cool) and use the free water to refill them.

Except for the first year none of the cokes ever exploded because of the plane trip.

Does anyone else do this?

That is the concern, bottles breaking. The luggage is piled on top of each other if the fluids are in the middle of the stack with hundreds of pounds on top, and everyone's luggage underneath.

I know of a returning bride with all her belongings returned to her soaked. Either from standing on a cart in the rain, or someone's drink supply. I don't know, but would a sturdy cooler be any better?

There are two HESS gas stations within walking distance of a) Boardwalk Hotel and b) DTD - near Marketplace. It's on the other side of the street. There is another HESS near the Poly, but you would need a taxi to drive you there.

Worst case scenario, you can take the bus from your resort to the DTD stop that is closest to HESS, then walk from the bus stop to the gas station, purchase your drinks and then carry back to the bus stop, then back to the hotel. Or, you could take a taxi from any hotel to the HESS station closest to you, load up, and have them drive you back to your hotel.

Nope. It never occurred to me to bring drinks until I read about people doing it on the DIS. I would be concerned about the bottles breaking/leaking. Plus we wouldn't be able to pack enough beverages to last a week in our suitcase without getting hit for overweight charges so it would only put off getting in-room beverages for a couple of days so it's not worth the trouble.

We have done this before. We just make sure we put them in gallon size zip locks before we put them into the luggage. Then you can use the ziplocks for something else when you unpack :drinking1

I've done water before. I don't think any of them broke but I wouldn't want to bring anything that might stain my stuff or anyone elses if it did break.

The last two trips we made we packed a box with bottles of pop in a double bag and have had no trouble.

Nope. The only thing I sometimes bring is a small bottle of whiskey. I don't need much and the resort shops now only sell larger sizes.

I put it in a "wine diaper", wrap it up in 2 ziploc bags and then it goes in my checked luggage. So far it's worked well.

I wouldn't want to deal with much more than that. I'd rather buy it at the Hess Station.

Staining wouldn't be my biggest concern. My larger concern would be paperwork, electronics, games, dvd players, camera. laptops, ipods, pictures, etc, etc. Just because you aren't packing those items doesn't mean someone else isn't.

As a courtesy to others at the risk of the drinks being smashed or popping due to pressure I would not pack any drinks even if it was packed in a ziploc bag. Ziplocs are not that sturdy either when crushed under 100's of lbs of luggage. I would only pack drinks if they were packed in a hard side cooler.

All my liquids(shampoo, toothpaste.....) get double bag. To protect my stuff. I would not pack a case of water and a case of soda. Might pack some alchol, but it too would be double baged and coushined real well.

Like someone said, I would not want paperwork, electronics or uniforms ruined due to liquids.

I Always pack a case of water distributed between checked luggage. I just put it in as is. I have never had a problem. I do put shampoo in a single bag before packing it.

I'm usually up to the weight on checked luggage. So no, I'm not paying extra luggage charges for water.

We have garden grocer bring us a small order - water, soda, breakfast stuff

The only drinkable liquids I've packed (vs a full size bottle of sunscreen, etc, double zip-top-baggied) has been wine and beer, and those were in "wine diapers" (that absorb anything spilled) AND in a WineChek bag that has insulated sides and a proper wine shipper box with styrofoam inserts inside of it.

Anyone who has watched the luggage handlers load the luggage would never put these items in checked bags. lol I think those items would be alot safer in your carryon, but that is just my opinion.

I will say that we did take water in our checked luggage in May. We flew Southwest and DH & I were allowed 2 checked bags each. We were only going for 5 days so we didn't need that many. We took 2 total and divided the water up between them. Layer of clothes, lots of water, beach towel, Layer of clothes. We didn't have any problems at all. We even brought some of the water back home with us. I wasn't too concerned about anything getting wet. It is just water and will dry fairly quickly. Luggage would have gotten more wet from sitting on the cart in the rain waiting to get loaded! ;)

People are not allowed through security with more than 4 oz of liquid per container and those little containers usually have to be in a quart-sized ziplock bag that has to be taken out of the carry-on and put in a bin that goes through the x-ray machine. Once you are through the security checkpoint you can then purchase bottled water or bring empty water bottles to fill up once you get past security, but you can't take full water bottles in carry-on luggage.

Thanks for that info. I already know that you can not take liquids thru security (unless a certain size).
But I never stated to take it in your carry on! Of course you would put it in your checked bags. :confused3

Oh, sorry! I must have misunderstood you when you said "those things would be safer in a carry-on. I assumed "those things" meant soda or water. I didn't see your bolded text. My apologies. :)

A couple of years ago, I had a large duffel bag ruined by someone's red wine that broke in their bag.

"those things" being the bolded part of pp statement. Guess I should have emphisised that instead of just bolding the quote. :)
Anyways, I guess the answer is yes, can put water in checked bags. It is completely up to you, OP, If you feel like taking the risk of it leaking. Like I said, I figure it was just water and my clothes would soak it up before any of it leaked out. AND I didn't have anything that would get ruined by getting wet with water, it would have all dried out fine.
We took it there and back and nothing happened.

No one with any sense would pack electronics or other valuables in checked baggage.

People pack liquids in checked bags every day; there are been dozens of threads on this board on this topic. It's perfectly safe and allowed by the airlines. I even own a wine suitcase for trips to Napa!
