Anyone in here decorate cakes?

OMG!

WOWZA, that is unbelieveable!! AWESOME job by someone for sure!!

BTW, forgot to tell the cake thread folks...I got a job decorating cakes for one of our local grocery stores. Although I won't get to do any fondant, I am learning to perfect simple skills and learn new ones...today was airbrushing. It was stressful...I learned how to airbrush a cake 2 hours before pickup, but it turned out great. It was a Harry Potter cake so that helped ;) and it turned out REALLY good. Sorry I don't have pics, no cell phones in the bakery  but I might have to get meself a disposable hidden back there somewhere

Hope you're all doing well!!

:goodvibes

wow, that's great! what a great opportunity to hone your skills! :) :goodvibes

OMG you guys...I thought I would post here because you would understand my freak out!! :rotfl:

As some of you may know, I have to do my externship next semester in order to complete my pastry and baking arts degree. I found a place who offers paid externships. I have an interview for it!!! I am soooooooooooooo nervous! Right now I only decorate for fun and the cakes are fairly simple. This is a place who does wedding cakes on a regular basis...:scared1:

Add to that stress my niece's 2nd birthday. I'm doing her cake and it's Little Mermaid themed. It'll be cute...but I stress myself out too much about getting it done. I'm creating Ariel's underwater castle...i'm using the sandcastle bundt cake pan along with the castle kit from Wilton. I've figured out how to fondant the castle cake without losing the details too! It was actually my husband's idea...lol...I'll be sure to post pictures when it's done this weekend.

Keep your fingers crossed!!

Now that I've finally figured out how to make my pictures small enough to post... here's some that I made for my kids' school Halloween Carnival this past weekend.

This one was purchased before it even made it to the actual carnival! The mom who was collecting the baked goods the day before purchased it for an adult costume party that night.

Let me know what you think. I'm just starting to think about making cakes for other people.

Mary

PS- At least I thought I could add pictures...I couldn't seem to get the pictures in the post so I added links. I'm technologically inept!:lmao:

Brandie! You'll do great! :) You do some beautiful cakes!

Mary, I saw your ghost/pumpkin cake on Cake Central and thought it was adorable.

Good luck Brandie, and NICE job on the cakes Mary. Hey Mo, I know you must be caking, lets see some pics :goodvibes and tell our mutual friends I miss them and sorry I haven't been around. :sad1:

The job is killing me but I like it. 9 hours of straight standing every day is taking a toll, I've been too tired to internet (oh the HORROR!) but I do love it at least. I dislocated my shoulder but thank god it's my left one or I would be seriously out of commission. Hopefully once I get into the swing of things I can cut a few hours a day off, it would help tremendously I'm sure.

Alright cakers, keep up the updates, nice to hear from ya'll.
:)

I got it!!!! My audition was yesterday. I went in and I had to decorate a 9x13 sheet cake and I had to fill, crumb coat, and ice another cake. I was nerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvous!! But I was smart and I paid attention to their style and used it in the cake that I decorated. That impressed them...I will only be part-time, which is good, as it allows me to retain my full-time status at my current job (that pays more! lol). My job will be to fill, crumb coat, ice, and stack the cakes. Maybe simple decorating, but no major decorating yet as I need to work on some things first. Eventually, she wants me to help bake and prepare fillings and icing. I'm nervous and excited all at the same time...I told my current job this morning about this and they are supportive of it. I've figured out how I can balance the two and I think I'll be ok. Since it's their slow season right now, I won't have to work very late, which allows me to do my homework at night.

I'll be caking tomorrow! My niece's birthday party is Saturday...I baked off her cakes yesterday and now have to decorate. I will be sure to post pictures and this should a cuuuuuuuuuuute cake! Little Mermaid themed.

Oh! And I found the coolest stuff!! There is now a spray on lustre dust! I got mine at Country Kitchen and it comes in a few colors. I bought the Pearl...and it's awesome! I'll be using it on my niece's cake so you'll be able to see it when I post the pictures! The stuff is pricey...$10 a can...but it's really cool!!

Congrats Brandie! That's great news! We knew you could do it! :thumbsup2

Mary, that ghost and pumpkin cake is so adorable...the ghost with the pumpkin on his head just cracks me up! :) Great job!

I didn't get an opportunity to decorate anything for halloween...as it was, I barely got to carve my pumpkin. I'm hoping to bake myself a birthday cake this weekend (my b-day is sunday)...I know you all won't be "aw, you have to make your own cake" b/c you guys KNOW that cakers know what we like best! LOL I've found passion fruit pulp at the Mexican market, so I will attempt a vanilla cake with passion fruit mousse...

I did a caramel apple cake and cupcakes for E's class but I can't find my cord to my camera for uploading pics. Argh! I have a cake order for Saturday that I need to start today. 65th birthday for a Harley dude.

Wow, I just found this thread and am so excited!
I usually split my time between disboards and cake central, and now I can stay longer over here!;)

I'm hoping to find the time this weekend to go back and look through past posts. And if any of you have suggestions for other cake threads here at dis, I would love to know!

Thanks!:goodvibes

Laura

Here is the 65th birthday cake I delivered this morning. I'm happy with how it turned out.

The fondant looks funky with the flash from the camera reflecting off of it but it really as more matte and looked like leather.

I recently had a lot of fun decorating a Monkey cake for DD's 10th b-day party. It was my first attempt at cake decorating. I thought it turned out pretty good! Thanks to the Martha Stewart website for the idea....did I just thank Martha Stewart!

Looks great Mo. You are so talented. Love the monkey too. DD9 would love that one.

:goodvibes Lots of great stuff to catch up on here in our caker thread...where to start!

First, Congrats to Brandie on your new job. That sounds so fab, you are going to do GREAT!! Big welcome to geekerbell, yay for cakers! Mos, LOVE the Harley cake, amazing job as always :thumbsup2 And Maddiemom, your monkey is Soooo cute. Really nice for a first!

Good to see everyone doing well. I got a bit of a bust at work on Friday, the rep from the company we work with dropped by and I never realized until then, but I am completely boxed in on what kinds of decor I can do on cakes. If it's not in their catalog, made by their specs (even the number of freaking flowers on the cake) and coming in at their weight, then it shouldn't go in the case. For a Grocery store. I am a bit disappointed (to put it mildly) but at least I am getting valuable experience that I will, hopefully, be able to use to move on to a REAL cake decorator or possibly start my own. Hey, they are paying me to perfect basic skills so who am I to complain?

Take care everyone, keep up the great work!

Alright my fellow cakers...here is the cake that I did for my niece's birthday this past weekend! It was all cake...the only non-edible parts of the cake were the turrets for the castle and the Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian figurines. Bottom tier is 12x18 french vanilla, next tier is 9x13 chocolate, and the castle was made using the nordicware sandcastle 3D pan. I lightly, and I mean lightly, crumbcoated the castle, attached fondant in pieces, and smoothed the heck out of it in order to get that detail. Airbrushed the castle pink, purple, and green, and then sprayed it with the new luster dust spray to make it sparkly. The bottom two cakes are just iced in buttercream with royal icing critters, coral, sea grass, and candy sea shells. The sand is graham crackers all crushed up with some sparkly sanding sugar mixed in. It was so much fun to make!!

WOW!

Totally cute Brandie! Did you get that Nordicware pan at Walmart? I was browsing the other day and almost bought it but I didn't.

ETA: I just saw the sock monkey. Very cute! I love sock monkeys.

Thanks! I bought it at Linens N Things with a 20% off coupon! I also have the pan with 6 little castles in it. I was originally going to use those, but decided that the castles were just too small.

Forgot to mention earlier...excellent Harley cake! That is way too cute! Are you working in a bakery/cake place or are you just doing this for fun? You are very talented!

Sock Monkey...ADORABLE!

I work with my aunt who is a caterer. I started doing cakes for her and just started my own business doing them recently. I've lucked out having her for connections and access to a commercial kitchen.

That's awesome! I was hoping for something like that myself. I guess we'll see what becomes of this part-time position I got! I know that they are looking into moving into a larger facility and doing some banquets and stuff. She did mention that she would like to have a store front as well.

Of course...this is assuming we don't get moved to Jacksonville, Florida! There's a possibility that my husband might get transferred...I don't mind moving to Florida, but I can't do it yet. Have to finish school first! Not to mention...I am dreading having to put our house up on the market! Houses just aren't selling in our neighborhood right now. :( Hoping that will change with the new mall going in a few miles up the road though!
