Anyone in here decorate cakes?

So, three months after starting this thread I can say I've finished Wilton 1, 2, and 3; tonight was the last night! I want to thank everyone that posted on this thread for keeping me interested and motivated to keep going.

I've learned so much more than I could have ever imagined - I'm still a beginner, but before all this my idea of frosting a cake would have involved a butter knife and a can of duncan hines frosting. I don't believe I ever removed a cake from a pan before this experience, frosting just went on the top :confused3 :rotfl:

So, here it is; my first tiered cake. It's the first time color matching (wedgewood blue) and coloring a large amount of fondant at once (I'll have GREAT arms  ). It's only my second attempt at covering a cake in fondant but I think it went well. The roses were also my first attempt at handmade flowers.

As for the inside, I decided to focus mostly on filling this time; the top tier is Butter Cake with Buttered Pecan Maple Buttercream Filling, and the bottom is Double Chocolate with Kahlua Espresso Buttercream. Special thanks to my friends that helped me decide the fillings ;) :thumbsup2 AND the color

And finally, DD11 did this by herself, even the design. Golf, anyone?

What a gorgeous job you did!! and Kudos to your daughters golf cupcake!

Here are two cakes that I did today, we have 2 women in my office getting married this weekend and taking both out to lunch tomorrow. The ivory cake is chocolate and the white/pink is red velvet.

Wow, how different they look in photos! The ivory cake looks SO brown in the photo, but in all actuality it is a nice light ivory color.

I have to admit to cheating a bit on the ivory cake. I bought the cake, in sheet cake form at Sam's and cut it up and stacked it. I got quite the look when I walked out of Sam's with an unfrosted cake.

The red velvet I baked myself from scratch and even made an extra for us to enjoy.

Now comes the unpleasant part.....cleanup. There is cornstarch, confectioner's sugar, bits of fondant and frosting all over the kitchen and dining room. The sink is also stacked high with dishes. But, it was a fun therapeutic day and the ladies at work will be very surprised, as neither knows that the cakes are coming!

Linda, your cakes look lovely. I am sure the ladies at work are going to be THRILLED to get such a generous and beautiful handmade creation to commemorate their special day.

I'm so glad you posted them, I love looking at all the cakes :thumbsup2

And cleanup is a MAJOR pain but it will be mucho worth it to see their faces (and then get to eat it, lol).
:)

So,

On my way in to work this morning somebody pulled right out in front of me causing me to slam on the brakes. The ivory cake made it just fine....the pink one did not and slid off the board and ended up sideways. The roses came off the top and the front, but the heart cake stayed put. Thank goodness!

So, I carefully picked it up.....thank goodness for the straws supporting the heart.....and placed it back on the board. It slid backward so the front of the cake still looked okay for presentation. I noticed all the flaws....but not many other people did. It still tasted great!

Both ladies were very surprised and now want to know why I am not making the cakes for their receptions!

I hate driving while caked...I swear people aim for me sometimes! At least you saved them :thumbsup2

My partner Lisa joked that she was going to have a sign made for my car, like a "Baby on Board" sign that says "Cakes on Board"

Think it will help?

Linda

that's a tag if ever I read one... :teeth:

Hey Cryssi, I better watch my mouth around here, I already got one in this thread

Linda, I did read somewhere that people DO use those signs! If you deliver enough cakes I would definately do it :thumbsup2

Hey cakers, I finished a cake this morning for my neighbor, her DD is turning 17 today and she wanted something different so here is...something different!

It's all good, I just wouldn't have picked those colors personally but they sure make it pop!

8" round 2-layer vanilla cake w/vanilla buttercream. Instead of shocking flavors she went for the visual punch instead. :goodvibes

Very nice!!!

I wouldn't have picked those colors either, but it does make the cake fun.

I will be working on one later this month for our agency picnic. A large sheet cake cut in the shape of our new logo....which is a puzzle piece that looks like a house. I will also be making 5 small cakes, one for each house to take home with them from the picnic. Slowly but surely my picture portfolio is growing.

Cryssi, I LOVE the monkey, the coloring is great and he is so SMOOTH! :thumbsup2

thanks you guys! I've discovered the secret is to use cornstarch when rolling out your fondant...kind of knead it in, too!
