I am extremely frustrated by my son's lack of progress in school. This has been an ongooing issue and thankfully the school department is beginning to agree with me. But that doesn't change the fact he is not progressing.

At yesterday's IEP meeting the school dept rep, whom I love, somehow mentined home schooling. So now I'm seriously considering it.

Basically my ds will be 12 in January but is heading towards Pre-K work. I'm thinking even if I home school for a few months maybe it will be enough to get him going?

Any help, comments, et would be appreciated.

I don't plan on many any hasty decisions, but just need to know all my options.

I homeschooled DS for 2nd, 3rd, 4th (which was really his 3rd-5th years). I taught him all his letter recognition, writing, sounds, and how to read. He never learned any of it in school. All I focused on was math, reading, and art (something fun). What was the point of science and history when you can't read? I placed him in public school when he seemed to plateu for me. It has been a struggle but he is holding his own, he is on a diploma track and in 9th grade. Since the school district suggested homeschooling perhaps they can provide a private education at public expense (their dime) or at least the text books so you are not out any money. You need to try to get something in writing so you can pursue some avenues. Follow up with email recapping your meeting to see what comments/response you get. Don't mention private school or the textbooks yet just see if they will reiterate their comments on homeschooling.

thanks for your response. He is actually in a private school, funded by the school department. It is a highly specialized school for kids just like my son. This has been his second placement and I'm just very frustrated.

I'm going to get onto my school district's website and speak with my friend's neighbor who home schools her typical children

I home school for medical and religious reasons and I love it. If you have the time, then I personally belive that you will love the time that you spend with your child. I think that your child might do better being at home because you know him best and you will be able to gauge his understanding and you can stop and focus on an area if you need to.

Have you asked your school if they would consider a "shared" educational program, Where you home schooled for part of the day for acedemics (or some other time split) and he still could get the socialization that is available at school since that is equally impaortant to many of our kids.
