I know it's not one of the BIG 4, but my DS is a junior in HS and we are trying to present him with all of his options. He doesn't know what he wants to do, so I feel leary of forking out big $$$ for college when he hasn't really shown a lot of interest in college. I thought some info on the Coast Guard might be in order (he's gotten stuff from the Army and my dad was a Marine). Anyone familiar with it?

I had 2 brothers and a BIL all in the Coast Guard so I have some knowledge of it, what in paticular are you looking for?

I guess....did they enjoy what they did? How often do they move you from base to base? Do they really help pay for schooling and if so, in what areas? Does it transfer over into civilian life fairly well?

Thanks in advance for any help :thumbsup2

Yes they all enjoyed their time in the CG, they all enlisted at the same time, DBIL (well now ex) Stayed in about 10 yrs and his training was responsible for getting him a good job at the Space Center in Cocoa. DB1 Stayed in a little longer and once he was out he went back to school and received his Degree as a Sped teacher, paid for with the GiBill he now uses his training from the Coast Guard as a chef...not just a cook he was fully trained as a chef and also Bar & Restaraunt Manager, he ran the Enlisted Club in Hawaii...along with his Sped Degree running his own business training HRS clients in the state of Florida as soux chefs. DB2 Stayed in the full 20, he started out as cook also evetually becoming a full chef, was the personal Chef to the Commadant of the CG Academy...he eventually was commisoned and became an Officer...he is now retired and really doesn't use any of his skills from the Coast Guard...but does enjoy the retirement benefits.

As for the education benefits while on active duty if the CG is the same as the Air Force then they pay 100% of tution up to 250 a credit hour.

Without asking them I believed they moved every 2-3 yrs depending on the assignment..whether it was ship or shore duty.

If it was my child I would suggest that he take the ASVAB and see where his strengths lie which would tell him which Branch of the Military he should consider more seriously than the others.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

Both me and my husband are in the Coast Guard. If you have any questions just shoot me an email.

Thank you for the great answer! I will be passing along the info to my DS.
