Anyone Here With GERD/Acid Reflux Disease?

I had this since 1998. I've been on either Prilosec or Nexium ever since. For the most part it is mild but, untreated, I get lots of nausea, feelings of fullness. I never get heartburn.

For the last month I've been under a lot of stress/anxiety and my GERD has been worse. Yesterday, I started having food come up into my throat if I had any fluid with my meal. Happened again this morning. The food goes down okay, but after I take a drink of water or something, I can feel it come up into my throat. Do any of you have that symptom?

Yes, I had that for years with my GERD. I finally got relief from a chiropractor who worked on getting my system acid down with diet and neutrocuticles.

I was fairly lucky, I was diagnosed with GERD a few years back. I was miserable...wasn't able to keep any food down but bread. The doctor gave me several different treatments, but the only thing that really worked for me was this acid reflux medicine that I can't remember the name of now.

Diane,
What are neutrocuticles? Are those the Omega-3s that are made from plant material (aglae)?

Yes, I went from where you are now, to choking at every meal, to vomiting at every meal. Don't put yourself through the torture. Make an appointment with your Gastroentelogist, and tell him your problems. I ended up having a scope done, and then was put on a pack of pills 7 a day for 14 days, (approx 4 yrs ago) and since then 1,000% better!!!! Call ASAP, don't live in discomfort. Good Luck.

canwegosoon,
I do see a GI fairly regularly. I've been scoped and I am on Nexium already. I guess I'm just trying to figure out what would cause the regurgitation all of the sudden. Just a bad flare-up?? I hate when these things happen because they just make me feel like I've got a big tumor or something.

See somebody else if you are not getting relief. I would go back and explain to your Doc that his/her plan is not working. I know you have to change your diet to manage reflux. But I have never had it THAT bad YET...Rattle your Doc's cage and get some RELIEF!

Right now 13yodd and I are taking that Prevacid, quick dissolve. Her issues are sore throat, headache, acid in mouth upon waking.
Mine are can't breathe and pain. It is so bizzare, this reflux stuff.

Caffeine is my enemy and I need to give up my coffee. Oh and it is worse with high fat foods.....WAAAH!

Yep, mine got like this 6 months ago after some meals and especially at night...major dry-heaving, barfing up acid, etc. My Dr. put me on Protonix, and that drug is a LIFESAVER for me. If I miss it by 12 hours, I am sick. I had no idea that I even had reflux until I started the queasiness/reflux after meals and the night vomiting. My Dr. thought that I had IBS because I had all of those yucky symptoms for years. Anyways, the Protonix took care of the "IBS" as well, so I guess that those were reflux symptoms too. I haven't had a burning esophagus feeling since I went on the Protonix. I never even realized that that was reflux. I am really thankful for the nausea/vomiting, because I wouldn't have told my Dr. about the reflux symptoms otherwise.

Sounds like you had the H. Pylori bacteria? I know they give you several medications for a few weeks to cure this. I have been tested for this and apparently don't have it.

My Dad had it and it was very severe.

He had so much GERD that it started to form scar tissue and close off his esophogus. He could not eat (not even something like a milkshake) without going to choke/vomit in the bathroom.

He had to have surgery where they had to create a new "flap' and re-route his esophogus. It sounds worse than it was. He hasn't had one problem since-no meds, nothing. This was after many years of meds and going in periodically to have his esophogus stretched.

I would call the Dr. and go in for a check up. Maybe there is something else you can take.

Good luck. :grouphug:

I had this for years and stress definitely made it worse! I took the pills, swallowed the cameras, etc. I finally felt better within 3 days of starting a low-carb way of eating. Maybe getting rid of sugar and white flour in your diet would help?

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Thanks Doreen. I know that this is probably stress and diet related. But it is still unnerving. Of course, I can't even get in to see my GI until January and then it would probably take another few weeks to get a "scope" appointment. So this is nothing I'm going to be able to solve medically in a quick way. I know people on the DIS "hate" medical questions and want you to go the doctor, but that can't always be done AND I am under a doctor's care for this.

I have been seriously stressed for well over a month. It started with my breast biopsy last month that, fortunately, turned out okay but still freaked me out. I have been having fairly moderate levels of anxiety/panic since then, and now have the typical "holiday" stress piling on, as well as eating "goodies". The in-laws are now coming on Christmas day and to stay overnight. I thought I was going to have a relaxing Christmas weekend lounging around in sweatpants, and now I've got to entertain. Hence, I now have food coming up in my throat. I guess I kind of hope that stress and bad eating are the cause.

Christine, if there is any way you can tactfully and financially swing it, rent a room at a local hotel for your in-laws! You deserve a bit of peace on Christmas! Tell them you aren't feeling well and they'd be more comfortable at a hotel.

Oh, God no, they would be so horribly insulted. They'd probably not EVER come again (hmmmm....maybe that IS a good idea). Honestly, I was supposed to go to their house for Thanksgiving and I had to back out because my breast surgery was 3 days before Thanksgiving and it ended up being a rough surgery. If I even make a *peep* about Christmas, I think DH will serve my head on a platter.

If they're DH's parents, then HE can take care of cleaning before they arrive, feeding them, entertaining them and cleaning up after them! :p I know, I'm dreaming! :teeth:

Christine, I'll keep you in my prayers - sounds like you're gonna need 'em!

Prayers & PD to you. Wishing you would be able to find a way to destress some way, some how before, after and during your holidays.

I too have been dealing with this in some form. You have already answered questions I didn't know to ask.
