Anyone here use SPG "Pay with Points"?

We are considering staying an extra night at the Sheraton Safari - we have enough for the Fri. night 2 Queen Beds room (3,000 SPG points).

My question (which I forgot to ask when I called), can I use another 1,000 of my SPG points to upgrade to a suite (if available)?

Or would just being a SPG member automatically qualify me for a free upgrade - if the room is available?

We have 4,600 points but I don't know if paying with points will allow you to upgrade...

Does anyone know?

You can pay for an upgrade with points.

It's far from automatic a regular SPG member will be upgraded (no more chance than anyone walking in off the street). You need to be a gold member or higher to automatically be upgraded.

Using them is easy, we do a free week at S/D every 18 mos or so on ours.
Using pure points has no blackouts, where using partial points or buying upgrades does. Personally, we never waste points on upgrades; we save them so that we can get that 5th night free.

So if I haven't made my reservation for next Friday and I want to use 3,000 pts. for a free night (level 2 hotel), can they tell me they don't have any rooms? Or does "no blackouts" mean that they can't turn me down? I would be using pure points.
