DS 10 is doing a project for school. The 5th grade has a "State Fair" every spring and they each get to pick a state. DS chose RI (because of Family Guy :rolleyes2 ). He's doing lots of research online at school, but I was wondering if there is anything special he should read about? He has lots of "facts" but I was looking for any local events or foods, famous people etc that he can look into.

TIA!

In Newport RI they have lots of festivals. One I go to is the Chowder Cookoff. Yummy..

hello! i'm from Rhode Island :) there are many festivals that happen in the summer, and especially in the Newport area as there are many tourists there at that time of the year. maybe your DS could research the Tall Ships, the Black Ships Festival, or even the Rhode Island International Film Festival. some famous people that are from the area are actress Debra Messing, the Farrelly Brothers [directed Dumb and Dumber], Christopher Walken lives on Block Island, and H. P. Lovecraft was from Providence and Gilbert Stuart was from North Kingstown [famous for painting the picture of George Washington used on the US $1 bill]. Edgar Allen Poe lived in Providence for some time, too.

let me know if you have any questions! :D hope this helps!

p.s. Chris Van Allsburg also attended and taught at the Rhode Island School of Design [one of the top art schools in the country] and he wrote Jumanji and The Polar Express. the recent Disney film Underdog was filmed in Providence.

for food how about:

coffee milk
dels lemonade ( i still need my fix of this every so often!)
clam cakes
quahogs

Thank you all! I will pass the info on to DS.

Another Rhode Islander here! I remember my son had to do the same thing in 5th grade. Besides the above mentioned festivals Newport has the Jazz and Folk festivals. We also have smaller ethnic feasts like Portugese - Italian - Greek - Irish and many more. And we can't forget that Bristol is home to the oldest continuous 4th of July parade that was started in 1785! If you need any props (like the coffee syrup, you can only get that in RI) I could send you some. Just let me know.

This thread is a year old! OP if you are still around what did your son end up doing?
