So, I know our trip is aways off still, but since I like to plan, I'm starting to look for an area where we'll stay overnight on our drive down to Disney from IL. It looked like Macon or Tifton would be a good place to stop, but not being familiar with these places, I want to know which place is recommended and what is a nice hotel to stay at, hopefully with an indoor pool. Thanks!

We stopped at the Wal-Mart in Macon on our way to Disney. I do remember seeing some motels but I couldn't tell you much about them. We stopped for the night in Chattanooga. I would not stop there again. Sorry if someone on this board lives there and loves it but I won't be returning anytime soon. My suggestion is to do a search for hotels in the Macon area online, then go to tripadvisor.com and see what other people have to say about the hotels.

I had breakfast in Macon once. Bacon and eggs. Nothing I like better in the morning than Macon....... :cool1:

Oh, nevermind.

I used to drive straight thru on my way to/from Savannah. I got caught in a tornado there once. But didn't stop - I was a stupid college kid.

I have no advice for you sorry.

We always drive through but we have never stopped. Tifton seems nice enough and there are plenty of places to stay. We always call it Tufton though. :p We're a little silly like that.

Look at the map carefully. You will be on I-75 as you drive into GA and through Atlanta. About an hour south of Atlanta, I-75 makes a turn to go through Macon. At that point, I-475 continues straight to FL. On the other side of Macon, I-75 merges back in with I475 to be I-75 again. You want to take 475 because you will get to FL faster. If you book a motel in advance in Macon, make sure it is off of 475, and not 75 in the middle of Macon. Macon actually has traffic around rush hour times.

We have stayed in Tifton several times. It's a nice little town. There are numerous roadside motels and restaurants. I would try to drive as far as Tifton because you will have less driving to FL the next day. I would do an on-line search to find a motel with an indoor pool. I can't think of any Tifton motels wiith indoor pools but there might be one.

Hi, I'm not from Tifton but I work in Tifton, live about 30 miles away. Anyway, couple of hotels in Tifton are the Holiday Inn right off of 75 but no indoor pool, Courtyard by Marriott and I'm not sure if there's an indoor pool or not, Ramada Inn but no indoor pool and Hampton Inn and again not sure about the indoor pool. I think if you chose Tifton, Courtyard by Marriott is the newest, best one to choose. It also has an Applebee's (or however you spell it  ) right next door.

Hope this helps to at least give you some names to call.

Heather

The Courtyard by Marriott in Tifton does have an indoor pool. We used to stay there twice a year going to Florida. The last 3 or 4 times we stayed there we thought it was going downhill.

There is a brand new Fairfield that I think is probably open now that I think we are going to try this time.

Macon can be a really rough and seedy place, especially right off the interstate. Tifton is nice. If you can make it a little further, we usually stop in Valdosta (actually think it might be Lake City, they kind of run together). We always stay at the Hampton Inn. It's right next door to lots of restaurants - Pizza Hut and Cracker Barrel I can vouch for. It's just a few miles from the Florida line so it doesn't take as long the next dayand we can tell the kids we're in Florida.

We stayed at the Clubhouse Inn in Tifton in 2002 and really liked it. It's a small regional chain and the place was nice and we got a good rate. They also have a hot breakfast buffet that's included in the price and a free "walk-up" PC with Internet in the lobby.

Stay away from Macon. It can be a somewhat scary place! (Yes, I know not ALL of Macon is that way.) Tifton is a MUCH better choice!

There is a Holiday Inn Express at Cordele with an indoor pool. Very nice place. I agree with previous poster--stay away from Macon!

Yall arent encouraging! hehe, I plan on attending Mercer University in Macon next year! :D
I dont know too much about the hotels i in either of those areas though I have been through them a countless number of times! I live about 45 mins away from Valdosta though, and could probably give you some info if you wanted about that. If you spent the night there, it would give you 4 or 5 hours to drive. Macon is about 3 hours north of my town, (not using 75 to get there) so that would be a considerable amount of driving time!
Good Luck with whatever you choose! When you get to where 75 crosses over 84 in Valdosta, gave out your right window at me! :)

I live about 24 miles from Macon and go there often. It can have it's rough side. If you stay here choose to stay off I-475 by passing thge city. Stay in one of the three or four hotels on Zebulon Rd. off I-475. This is a safe area and has clean rooms and a few good restaurants near. Other than that area I would skip Macon and head south to Perry, Cordele, or continue to Tifton. Perry is about 30 minutes farther south than Macon, Cordele is about 55 minutes south of Macon and Tifton is another 30 -45 minutes past Cordele. As you can see the distance between the two cities you have chosen is fairly good. I suppoose timing will be the key here. How far will you be willing to drive on a particular day to get to your overnight accomodations. All of the places I have listed are safe areas. I can give and get you much more info if you need it. Just let me know.

Dancergirl- You will be just fine in Macon. It is a nice, pretty southern town. Nonetheless, there are some areas that could be described as a bit "rough". You won't wander into that part of town by accident as a Mercer student. However, if you were an interstate traveler who pulls off I75 to find a place to spend the night, it might not be what you were hoping to find. Good luck at Mercer!

I find Macon to be a pretty southern town too. It blows my mind that people are describing Macon as "rough and seedy"! I live about 15 min from there and it is a beautiful city. The only rough area I can think of is the projects, and you sure as heck won't be venturing there if you are staying in a motel off of 75 OR 475!

Has anyone ever stayed in Bryon, GA which is just south of Macon on I-75? Or should we keep on going and stay in Cordele or Tifton?

Been to WDW many times but always flew, first time driving to the parks.

Thanks

Byron is nice, it is just small. I think you would have more dining and entertainment options if you stayed in Warner Robins or Perry.....both of these towns are just a few miles south.
