Hi all...

Having some lousy training issues for the Princess 1/2...so, to reassure myself that it isn't the end of the world, I'd LOVE to hear from someone who has been swept at a Disney race.

How bad is it? Did you get all bummed or was it all just part of the experience? Did you totally give up or did you ever go back and finish another race?

I'm trying to convince myself not to just cancel my trip....so hearing from some others would be helpful

Thanks!!

Soupy: I'm sure other WISHers will see this thread and speak specifically to their experiences, but didn't want you to think you've been ignored.

Don't give up! Remember the DNF>DLF>DNS motto. So long as you aren't too injured to attempt the 1/2, I say go for it! You'll have an awesome time at the Princess 1/2, I just know it.

I don't know about you, but even in training I found it somewhat amazing that--no matter how difficult the LSD was--I was doing more than I ever thought possible when I first started this journey. To have the courage to start, that's the gift we've been given here. Don't sell yourself, or that experience, short! :cheer2:

I haven't been swept, so I can't speak from personal experience, but I do know others who have been or haven't completed their races. Many went farther and faster than they ever though possible, and were able to celebrate those accomplishments. And they've seemed even more energized to come back for their do-over and get that medal.

I haven't been personally swept but then again I haven't run many races. I read two stories this year about people being swept. One person was on my team and I can't remember the other WISH'er but she was talking about being swept around the HS/Boardwalk area during the marathon. I'll have to do some searching for the posts.

When I did my first race this year (Minnie 15K), I lost about 6 weeks of training because of an injury. I went from thinking I wasn't even going to participate, to maybe just walking and finally to a run/walk during the race. Thank goodness for my PT! I lost a lot of my cardio during that 6 weeks but I was able to finish :) So you never know, a lot can change in a short amount of time.

Good luck with your race!!

I haven't been officially swept, but I did pull myself out at mile 18 of the Jan 2008 full when I was getting dizzy and lightheaded. It was disappointing, no doubt about that, but not the end of the world. If you won't hurt yourself more by doing the half please consider going for it!

I've only done one race that was timed and I wasn't swept so I can't speak about that. I can speak about being scared of being swept. During the half, I developed a rather nagging pain in my toe area on my left foot. I thought it was a blister. Nothing I did helped. I saw the medical tents a couple of times but I wouldn't stop. Why? Well, 2 reasons. One, I thought I might be kept in there to long and it would push me behind the time limit. Two, I was scared that they would see something that would make them take my number so I wouldn't be able to finish so as the old saying goes, I just grinned and bear it. Because of this, I had a hard time walking for several days after the race. Part of me wishes I had stopped and gotten it looked at. Another part of me is very proud of the accomplishment of continuing on even in the face of adversity.

Not much of an answer but I would definitley say to not quit. If you do, you will wonder what could have been. I am willing to bet that you will surprise yourself.

Happy training!!

Good Luck! Good Training! As Mary Poppins would say, "A job well begun is already 1/2 done!"

I came too too close in '08...

I was encouraged to write up and post the pics of my Half (first ever for me) experience in Disney - if not for the kindness of a stranger, and the Screamin support from WISH Team'ers I would've quit!

I posted a pic from Mile 10 (sweeping point) Mile 11 (threat to sweep point) Mile 12 (parking lot of EPCOT) with a bike sweeper...

I should go post a lesson I learned...

I say go for it! I was swept in 2005 (My first time out). I walked off the course in the Innaugural Disneyland 1/2 in 2006. I had training/injury issues going into Disneyland, but I started anyway. Come to find out I also had bronchitis, but that's beside the point. No matter how prepared you are or how much you trained, things that are out of your control can and do happen. Don't cancel your trip just because you don't feel like you aren't prepared. Even if you are swept you started and that is a lot more than most people do. Be careful not to aggrevate any injuries.

There is not beside the point. You were MISERIBLE!

Honestly she didn't know or should I say I didn't know cause someone kept someone else in the dark on just how sick someone was. You were sick! SICK I say! :crazy2: Didn't you notice we were treating you like you had the plague? :scared: j/k she was really sick. she just thought it was a little cold (yeah, like a cold is little in th face of 13 miles) she returned home and was told she had bronchitis.

And regarding 2005 I thought we pink swore we would never mention that again. :ssst:

A funny story relating to being swept. We didn't care for people on bikes for a long long time after that. So one day we were at our local park putting in some miles and along comes a guy on a bike :moped: who had the gall to say to us.....

Better pick up the pace girls

I kid you not. Funny I haven't seen him since *pushing the shovel away with my toe*

I think both of our jaws hit the ground and it was a bit before we were able to say "He didn't just say that did he?" By which time he was long gone.

Again I have no idea WHY he disappeared :teeth:

2005 was a learning experience, one that taught me that I LOVE the distance and wanted to make it part of my life. I'm glad I started that morning. I learned a lot and continue to learn new things about my training and racing.

It's all good! :flower3: Put your miles in, do your training and have faith in yourself. Sometimes we surprise even ourselves

Come play! princess:
