Anyone heard of FullSail?

I've just read this thread, and I guess my main question is why the speed of the program seems like a bonus. If it doesn't save on cost, why wouldn't you want the experience of a four year college? You grow a lot in college, and you might as well enjoy all of it.

Well, my son was very impressed with the equipment at the school. He and my husband visited 2 weeks ago. The tour itself was quite a production, almost Disney-like they said, so it was a little much. However, my son really has his heart set on going there, but my husband and I are encouraging him to go to a traditional college, get a degree (in computer, film, engineering, ANYTHING) and then go to film school if his heart is still into it. I'm trying to make him see that it would not be a waste of time to put film school off because he would be gaining experience and an education that he can fall back on.

He knows our feelings and has applied to other colleges, but I don't know what the outcome will be.

One program he might want to look at is George Mason University's new Film and Visual Studies major (DIS wouldn't let me post a link, but you can search for it on gmu.edu). The page for it doesn't really describe it well, and if you want more details you could send an email to the GMU admissions people (or me - I have an outline of what courses will be included). They have courses in digital art, film editing, theater, lighting, etc. while still having a normal four year college experience so that your son would have a well rounded education.

A nice thing about going to a school like GMU is that he can minor or even double major in Computer Science with more generalized skills than just the film skills. Then if film doesn't work out or if he finds he likes CS better or something, he has the degree and education to go into other fields.

Try North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC ncarts.edu
They have a great reputation. I know more about their design/tech program than their film program. I've seen the film studios and sound stages - very impressive. The architecture looks like Hollywood or maybe a street on MGM - very cool. They offer BFA conservatory degrees designed for serious students who know what they want. It may be worth looking at.

I was looking into FS for a degree in music production and have a friend who started there for stage production and left..unfortunately because it is a 4 year program that is condensed into 2 years its more stressfull than regular college, you have labs sometimes into the early morning hours just to get up early and start again.

I'm still appreciative of any responses on this thread. My son has applied to 3 colleges and FS. He really wants to go to FS, no matter what he hears. We'll see.
