Saw a promo for tomorrow evening's 5:00 news on WTAE Pittsburgh and the announcer said something to this effect:

"Massive Girl Scout Cookie Recall! Tune in tomorrow to find out if your cookies will make you sick."

Being quite involved in the whole cookie sale process I was quite concerned and immediately went on-line to see what I could find out. Figured that I will be fielding a lot of questions.

I went to WTAE's web site and did a search - NOTHING.

I went to Yahoo, Google, and Infoseek to search - NOTHING (except something about a recall last summer of Edy's Girl Scout Cookie ice cream because it might contain peanuts and it was not included on the ingredients.)

I went to our bakery's web site which was dated today and found NOTHING.

Do you all think that I am safe thinking that this will be some blown out of proportion news promo?

Or have any of you heard about a GS Cookie recall? If so, PLEASE point me in the direction of some information.

Thanks!

that if it was a serious recall - they wouldn't wait until tomorrow to tell you about it!

Just my humble opinion.

Sandi

Exactly MY thoughts as well, Sandi! :)

They have a number of newscasts between now and tomorrow at 5. It would seem irresponsible to withhold information about cookies that could "make you sick."

I am SOOOO aggravated!

Of course then I always second guess myself and wonder if I heard things correctly. Thank goodness DH was in the room and heard the same thing. .

Well, I have not heard anything here.

I just checked all but a few of the area tv stations, and didn't see anything. Some troops in the area picked up cookies last week, others are getting theirs this week.

There are at least two bakers of Girl Scout cookies.

I did find a little blurb on WTAE's website - in the left hand column about 1/3 of the way down. http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/

Here is what it said:

Tuesday at 5 p.m. on Action News: A massive misprint on Girl Scout cookie boxes. What you should know before you get sick.

Now I may have misheard, I don't know - but I SWEAR the newsreader said massive RECALL.

Now I am feeling silly... :o

Same here with deliveries Intense Blue. Ours came last Friday, but they will be delivered through this Friday.

There are 3 GS Cookie Bakers. Ours is Little Brownie Bakers. And almost all of the surrounding areas use Little Brownie Bakers as well. It was their website that I checked out. I will have to look further into their site to see if they say anything about a misprint.

I am feeling a bit foolish though...

We use abc/interbake based in Virginia. Their website says they supply 40% of Girl Scout cookies throughout the US.

There's no mention on GirlScouts.org about this either.

Thanks for mentioning the GSUSA site. I did not think to look there.

:)

I ate a box of Thin Mints in 2 days and am currently working on a box of Friendship Circles. All I'm feeling is FAT.

Haven't heard anything but our cookies were delayed a week due to weather - ours will finally be ready to be picked up for delivery this Thursday

I bet this is going to have to do with food allergy issues. Must be planning a slow news day in Pittsburgh. :teeth:

I have two boxes of Thin Mints in my freezer that I have been wanting to tear into. I'm seeing how long I can hold out. lol I still need to get my hands on some Animal Treasures.

I'll bet that you are right about the food allergies, Miss Jasmine! :)

Frozen Thin Mints are BETTER than NOT frozen! ;)

Last year one of the bakers had a recall on the Thin Mints because of a misprint on box (that may have been just in a surrounding council but it was the baker we have which is ABC and I have been told there are only two bakers as listed on the GSUSA site). So perhaps it's just a box issue and they need to have the correct information on the box because, as you said, it could have a misprint that could trigger an allergy for someone. My husband has a problem with soy based products so that would make him miserable if they contained soy based products but wasn't on the labels and we do read labels.

When you hear something like this you should always check the GSUSA site or if your council has a site you should also check there. If it were affecting your area, they probably would have some sort of notification process and begin notifying troops immediately. I'm interested now in hearing what your news has to say tonight.

Hi Dec99!

I did contact my council immediately last night by e-mail. I did not think to look at their website. Guess I just figured that something would come up in a search if there was anything to be concerned about.

I got this in reply to my e-mail to council first thing this AM:

WE are aware of the teasers that were on WTAE regarding Girl Scout cookies.
At no time did we notify WTAE of any problem nor do we know of any health related problems with the cookies.
WE are working with WTAE to resolve this misinformation.

So either GSSWPA is really out of the loop, or WTAE has some misinformation. I would think that if we are supposed to be pulling cookies, we should know by now.

I always thought that there were 3 bakers. Guess one must have gone away.

I see that the promo on WTAE's website concerning the cookies is now gone.

That is very interesting Beth. It is possible that one of the companies may have been bought by one of the current companies but I'm not sure. We just go by the GSUSA site but someone else mentioned that there were 3 also. I've always known of just 2 companies. Well I hope that station has learned a very important lesson - proves the media is not always necessarily right and that they don't always gather their data before they speak....sounds like the situation I'm going through right now with my ex-mil!!!!

There IS a girl scout cookie recall. You need to send all of your cookies to me!
