LARGO — Linda Joy Taylor had a reputation for motivating the students she taught at Largo Middle School.

On Tuesday, the school community was reeling from the news that she had taken her own life.

The seventh-grade language arts teacher shot herself on the school grounds Monday, Largo police Lt. Mike Loux said.

She was found about 5 p.m. by a maintenance worker in front of the school on Eighth Avenue SE, Loux said. The school was closed at the time for the winter holidays.

Taylor, 47, left a note, but Loux said he would not reveal the contents.

"Her kids loved her. They listened to her not just like a teacher or mentor, but like a mom figure," said Kathi Bentley, a former assistant principal at Largo Middle who now works at Pinellas Park Middle School. "She had a way to make the kids do well for her and be successful."

Bentley said Taylor, who has worked for Pinellas County schools for nearly nine years, often volunteered for extra duties and helped her out with school skating parties.

Mark Hunsinger, a sixth-grade science teacher at the school, said Taylor was "very kid-oriented" and active in an incentive program called Tiger Bucks that rewards students with extracurricular activities for positive behavior.

Taylor had a reputation for being strict, but not too strict, said former student Keila Wright, 15.

"She was fun to be around," said Wright, now a freshman at Largo High. "Sometimes kids would upset her, but usually she was in a good mood."

She recalled that Taylor wore heels and lipstick and "always looked pretty."

Largo Middle School principal Fred Ulrich would not comment specifically about Taylor, but said the school has a plan in place to support students and faculty members when they return to school Jan. 5.

"We will have counselors, social workers and our school psychologist," Ulrich said. "All will be available come Monday morning for both students and staff, for any kind of grief counseling or whatever we can do to help them through this trauma."

Taylor lived in Belleair Bluffs, according to school records. She has worked for the school system since March 1, 2000, said Andrea Zahn, a school spokeswoman. Other personnel information about Taylor was not accessible because school system offices are closed for the holidays, Zahn said.

That is so sad.

Wait. This was your teacher?

Very sad , my heart goes out to her family and the school and students.

Was this your teacher?

I'm so sorry. :(
My prayers and thoughts go to her, her family, and all of her students.

Oh wow that is so horrible.
That is so close to me too, like I know so many people who went to middle school there. I didn't hear a thing about it though. :( I guess people will be talking about it soon though.
My heart goes out to anybody involved.

That's so sad. There was an elementary art teacher at my old school that killed herself.

It's so hard to understand.

Awww thats soo sad ): And this was your LA teacher?

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and anyone involved.

holy wow.
that is totally in the same area as me. and i never heard of it. o0
that really is sad news to hear that the students have lost someone important to them, but my condolences for them aside, i really just can't find time to respect someone that has commited suicide.

im not fighting. this is my opinion.
suicide is not something that i respect. everyone goes through tough times in their lives, that's just how life in general is. choosing to take the "easy way out" just aggrivates me. i can feel remorse and sadness for those that have lost an obviously good person, but i cannot feel respect for someone that has committed suicide.

my prayers are with her and her family and everyone she was close to.

Her family, friends and students will be in my thoughts.
I'm sorry that you lost a teacher..
From what you wrote, she sounded like a lovely woman.

I'm not fighting either, I was just wondering why you lose all respect for a person who usually has a chemical imbalance in their brain and causes them to have depression and eventually lose all hope in theirself. Because in most cases, it really isn't their fault. Granted, they need to talk to somebody and try to get some help, obviously I don't support random suicide, but if this lady tried to get help beforehand and nobody took her seriously, I really really feel sorry for her and her students/family.

Lol people I did not write this it was from a newspapers website I just copied it. :rotfl2: Oh and for all anyone knows there were no witnesses so somebody could have forced her to write a note to make it look like suicide and that person shot her and put it in her hands ran away. Also where she died there was no camera angle close enough to shoot it to tell if it homicide or suicide.

because sometimes you cant just rely on the excuse of a chemical inbalance.
sometimes people really cant just handle the hurtles life throws at them and they cheap out. ive known 2 people now that have done it, one of which did it over a break up with a girlfriend. i just dont respect someone who think that only death can solve their problems. sorry.
