I am thinking of doing an add on with a different use year than my original contract but I'm afraid of getting all confused  -- would it be better to get my new add on as the same use year as to not confuse myself???

Unless you're going to add 150 points or go resale, you may be out of luck. DVC will not generally sell you an add on less than 150 points that is not your use year.

I have two different UY and so far so good. I switch off which contract I am using depending on when we are going to travel. (In case we have to cancle, I could still bank the points)

It can be confusing.... but we think it is worth it.

Laura,

Same with me, I have most of my points in a Dec. use year. But I purposedly bought a resale with an Oct. use year so that I don't have to worry about going for Holloween or Thanksgiving.

In addition, with Disney's new transfer policy, I can still transfer the points from one use year to another and use them altogether for the reservations.

I confirmed with MS the second time recently. You can transfer from one membership to another as many times as you want each year. However, each account only goes one way in a year. So, if you transfer out points out of one account, that account can only transfer out in that year. The account where you have points tranferred in can only receive points in that particular year.

MS confirmed that it is definately as many times as possible either tranfer IN or OUT.

Our main use year is December also... most of our trips are in Jan, May and October.... Our second use year is August.

We bought our add-on with the same use year at the same Home Resort, It gives me a full 480 point allowance (any room we want - no borrowing) without moving anything for confusion with all points at the 1 resort at the 11 month window - If we want to try another resort, we can simply call at the 7 month window till the day before the trip date to see if there are any avalibities or cancelations at any DVC home resorts for the same dates. Either way its a win win for us.

Giga makes a very good point.... Our August UY contract is 270 points at BWV.... our Dec UY contracts are 430 @OKW and 170 @ BCV. Each UY having enough "weight" to statisfy our vacation needs....

If we had smaller contracts I would be more tempted to have them all at our favorite resort...... OR plan on splitting our stay between the two every vacation.

So, if I want to add on only 100 points it will automatically be added on to my existing contract?? What if I want a different resort??

Any contract for 149 points or less must be in your exsisting UY. You can have 'add-on's' at any resort. You will have the same membership number.

Any contract for 150 or higher can be any UY/resort. Each new contract that is both 150 points or higher AND a different UY from your origianl contract will have a seperate membership number. Regardless of the resort.

I hope that helps..... and did I get that right??? LOL

Yes, for contracts brought through Disney. Contracts bought on the resale market can be any size and any use year.

Laura and Robin have answered your questions but I thought I expand a little on what info was given. Obviously you can only buy certain resorts from Disney and they will require any "add on" contract to be the same use year regardless of which resort you are adding on points for. Robin is referring to the fact that if you buy an add on contract on the resale market, Disney has no way to enforce the 150 point minimum other than excercising their Right of First Refusal. I'm sure Shontell can shed more light in this area but it appears they buy back many but not all of the smaller (less than 150) contracts to non members. There are a couple of people I'm aware of that have bought their first ownership of less than 150 points.
