We just found out today, Brandon has to get his tonsils and adenoids out. The first available surgery date is September 27th, the day before Haylee's 1st birthday. Now I wasn't going to have the party until the next Sunday, 6 days after the surgery. Do you think he'll be OK or should I wait another week to have Haylee's party, which will be 13 days after the surgery. The surgery has to be the 27th. The surgeon is on vacation the 1st week in Oct. and going to the 2nd week is taking us only until a month before we leave for vacation. I want to make sure he is completely recovered either way. Opinions?

6 days will be too soon. My DD had her tonsils and adenoids out (and ear tubes put in) in Dec. She was 5 at the time and she was an absolute trooper. I was amazed at how well she handled everything and how smooth her recovery was. Even so, it was 10 days before she was back to go. The first couple days aren't the worst of it. Around day 4 the scars start to heal and that hurts. So, expect a bit of a regression from days 4-6. Also, you probably don't want guests to bring extra germs into the house so soon after the surgery.

Our experience with this surgery was very positive. It was the best thing we could have done for our DD. I hope it goes as well for your child.

Best wishes!!

our daughter had hers out in first grade
she was amazing by day 2 she was feeling better and tired of being told to stay in bed she missed 1 week of school

recovery depends on the kid i would think
so in my DD case would she have been up to a party 6 days later probably BUT i would probably have postponed it because of other kids bringing in Germs that may have led to infection

I would put off the party until the two weeks after the surgery, just because you don't know ahead of time how things will progress as far as your son's recovery goes. (Of course, my wishes go out to your family for a speedy recovery after a hopefully uneventful surgery.)

My DD was in third grade; she had the surgery in April. She felt almost 100% better after about 4 days, but the surgeon would not release her to go back to school until he saw her for her post-op check-up, which was 9 days after the surgery. (I think I had an extra-cautious surgeon, but frankly I was glad of that!) He would not see her until at least one week after surgery. I did not let DD go anywhere until after that check-up...

(Slightly OT: My husband and I were separated at that time. DD had surgery on April 27. The man wanted to know if she could come to help celebrate his 40th birthday with him on the 29th!!! Ummm, NO!!)

My DD had her tonsills and adenoids taken out just before her 8th birthday (party was postphoned for 10 days) She got strepthroat 4 times in one year and noone else had it, not in her class or anything.

After surgery the dr told us she developed it herself as her tonsills were to infected by themselves to have ability to fight of any other infections..poor thing!

Almost 2 years later, never once strepthroat :sunny:

It was hard on her though, she didn't want to drink enough afterwards..at home :( It hurt so bad to swallow, I had to call the doctore and he told me to "pack to go to the hospital" ;) ...that made her work harder on drinking...from small glasses. He said he didn't want her to dehydrate..neither did we!!!

Now she says she doesn't miss them LOL

Why not have the party the week before surgery? The baby won't know the difference and the will give the little guy plenty of time for recovery.

I would wait longer, 6 days would probably be too soon. 8 days after my daughter had hers taken out she was feeling good enough to maybe go out of the house. Gupsmom is right, the first couple days aren't the worst. Be ready for a battle on getting them to swallow! And my daughter acted really wierd on the Tylenol with codeine so we only kept her on it for 2 days--she was kind of hallucinating. Very scary! My daughter had hers out during spring break and hasn't been sick yet, but school starts back again soon then we'll see if it helps. She was having frequent ear infections and her tonsils were HUGE-making it hard for her to swallow. She has gained some weight since the surgery. The dr was amazed at how big they were. Poor kid!

How about having her party the weekend of the 25th? 6 days is too soon. My ds developed complications around the 6th day (which is unusual, but he's unusual, he is my ds:p ).

My niece (6) had hers out last week. She was fine after a couple days - her voice still soudns funny though. BUT, you never know! I'd schedule the party before the surgery if it were me.

Good luck!

My DD just had hers out last past Wed. Her doc says she can go back to school Monday if she wants to. She's doing great so far. I would postpone the party or have it earlier though.

DD 6 had hers out when she was 3......

I would have the party BEFORE the surgery.

DD3 was great, but it was a good 10-14 days before she was 100% herself, and one thing you DONT want is for him to get overrun, etc... and a party would certainly do that!

On another note- please keep an eye on your daughter. When DD6 had to go to the hospital DD8 was VERY upset, I had given her teacher a warning about it, which I'm glad we did, because she was not herself that entire day. She was very clingy to the teacher etc..

Dh and I were at the hospital and my MIL picked up DD8 at kindergarten, but she was very concerned, and upset for her sister.
