I get them all the time and I get them (some) removed every so often. they say its a virus. Anyone have any clues as to prevent them? They are mostly on my upper chest, neck area.

Sorry to be gross so early in the morning.

I'm just trying to reach 400 posts before I go to work today!

You might try to put some duck tape on it (there's a chemical in the glue, I think, that eats away at the component that causes warts and skin tags).

Karen,
I don't know what causes them but I have them too. They are also in the areas that you described. I have had them since I was in my teens. I asked the doctor about having them removed one time. He said he could do it for me but he wouldn't guarantee that they wouldn't come back.
My husband has them now too. He has only started getting them in the last couple of years. If it is a virus and he caught it from me it took him a really long time to get it. We have been married 20 years and were together about two before that. I guess it could be that and it just lays dormant for a while.
What do they do to take them off? Does it hurt? My husband cut one of his off with a pair of scissors. Yuck-yuck-yuck. I'm too chicken to do anything like that.

I've one on my left armpit for as long as I remember. No other ones though.

Duct tape, hmmmmm, another handy use.;)

I get those, too, along the neck mostly. Sometimes they really get in the way of a necklace that has a fine chain, and get irritated. Had a bunch removed this spring before DD's wedding. The doctor said that she also couldn't guarantee that they wouldn't come back. And, to make matters worse...she told me that it's just something that happens to a lot of people as they age....can ya make me feel worse! Liverspots, tags, creaky bones......is there no end!??!?!?!

Karen - she snipped them off with these tiny scissors. It pinched, but I wouldn't say it hurt. I would certainly not hesitate to do it again.

Me too. I get them in the upper chest area all the time. Each year my doctor removes them for me. She also said they could come back, but I don't care because I just have her snip them off again! :p

My doctor puts a little tiny bit of anastetic (sp?) on each one first so I don't feel anything. I just leave her office with a bunch of those littel round bandaids on me....looks like I might leak if you remove them! :p

Anything sharp will take them off. A razor would be better than scissors, I think. It doesn't hurt, just kinda stings. I had one on my neck and it bled for a long time when I removed it, but I bleed pretty easily.

I have them too and my doctor told me to just snip them off with a scissors and use a styptic pencil to stop the bleeding. Haven't had the guts to try it yet though.

i also have one on my armpit and some on my neck. i had no idea they were caused by a virus!!! i've had the one on my armpit at least since i was 10. they don't really bother me though, since they're pretty small and unnoticeable. they just look like tiny moles or something.

DH and I both get them, too. Our doc said to snip them off with clean scissors. DH has snipped a couple, but I'm chicken.

<font color=navy>Ugh. I have these, too, and have one that is big enough to really bother me, but not a long one. I'm too chicken to snip it myself, and too lazy to go to the doctors. I've pinched a couple of little ones off before, and it stung a tiny bit, but didn't hurt.

I like the duct tape idea...... hmmmmm

Okay, so color me dumb, but I have never heard of this. I deal with warts on occasion, but have never heard of tags. Guess I lead a sheltered life.

I had three removed by my ENT and he said unfortunately they do come back and the older you get the more likely you are to have them. Gee thanks! Just what I need one more reminder...is the gray hair not enough! :p

My dd has had these for 6 years and they come on her face, The dermatologist prescribed her some cream and she has been clear for 6 months!!!! It's caused by a virus , some drs call them skin tags others call them warts. But the cream worked!! my dd is only 9 an is sooooooo glad their gone.

maybe i am confised as to what a skin tag is.

i've had warts before and what i was referring to are definately NOT warts.

I have had my dd to three different dermatologist and two called the skin tags and one called the warts they stick out and they aren't like regular warts, they have fallin off but bleed after that alot and they come back. she has had them frozon off and they came back. these are long and skinny and very small and white. I would check with a dermatologist to see what they are . we have been fighting these for years and they came back about every two or three months and now with this cream she has none on her face.

Some info. from a medical site:

As we get older, we often develop small skin tags. About 50-60% of people over the age of 50 have them. Sometimes they run in families. Their medical name is fibro-epithelial polyp or achondrochordon.
Skin tags are soft lumps, attached to the skin by a stalk. They are the same colour as your skin, and are usually under 0.5 cm in size. They tend to occur in the armpits, neck and groins. You may have only one, but usually there are several.

They do not turn into cancer, and they are not dangerous. However, they look unsightly, and they can be a nuisance (catching on clothing or jewellery), so you may wish to get rid of them.

There is no way of preventing new skin tags developing, but your family doctor can deal with those that you already have. There are various ways of doing this - such as snipping them off (but don’t try this yourself) or freezing with liquid nitrogen.

Ooops well I have always "snipped them myself". It has worked for me. They do bleed so be ready to put some pressure on it. I just cut it at the base and so far they have not come back in the same spot. Cheaper then going to the dr. who did basically the same thing. Hope everyone has had breakfast by now
:D

I have snipped off some of my own but last time I had minor surgery on my upper arm, I had one on my eyelid that bothered me (cosmetic thing for me) and he burned it off. he also burned about 10 off my back, on the bra line. I usually have them on my neck and bra line near the shoulder area. I will call the doc and see what kind of cream or ointment he recommends. I'm glad I am not the only one with these. I was starting to feel gross. I don't think anyone would notice them on me because they are real small.

I'd love to know the name of the cream. I have one on my eyelid, but I'm not brave enough to snip it and have dreaded having it burned off. Wondering if the cream would work on my eyelid?
