Paul is 30 months old now, and he seems to really favor his left hand. He uses it for coloring, holds his fork and spoon in it, etc. I was just wondering if he was going to be a lefty, or if it's too soon to tell. Neither my husband or I have any left handed people in our family, so I'm not sure how early you can tell about that sort of thing. For those of you with left handed children, when did you start to notice it? Just curious. :)

Both our kids favored their left hands from about 28-34 months then became obvious righties. Maybe its something about that age group? I don't know but I just asked dh to confirm and he remembers it to, stopping shortly before their 3rd birthdays.

My DS is left-handed. Up until he was about 3 1/2, he would use both hands to color, eat, etc. By that time, he was noticeably favoring the left hand. He had recently started preschool, so that may have had something to do with him starting to use the one hand instead of both. :confused3

DD is a lefty- DH and I are both righties. It's weird- my brother and his wife are righties, and 2 of their 3 are lefties, and DH's sister and her hubby are both righties, and 2 of their 3 are lefties, too!! I think that there is less effort to "retrain" lefties nowadays- that's why you see so many more than when we were kids. I remember back then, there was more of an effort to "force" right-handedness on kids. I suppose that's why there are so many people 40+ yrs old with bad handwriting.

DD favored her left hand from the first time she started holding things. She always held her spoon, bottle, etc in her left hand. When she started scribbling with crayons and attempting to throw a ball, it was always with her left hand. I'd say I started noticing her lefty tendencies at around the age of 14-16 months. She never changed over to the right hand, but I suppose some kids could. My bet is, though, that if he really favors his left hand, he will continue to do so.

My oldest is a lefty. Total surprise though I think my aunt or my grandmother is a lefty.

He was probably around that age when we discovered it. He does a lot of sports things right handed, though, like batting.

Both kids favored the left as toddlers. DS8 is mainly a righty, but plays sports left handed(Golf, Baseball, Snowboarding) DD5 is a true lefty.

I'm left handed and my daughter is too. I can't remember when I started noticing her favoring her left hand but I like having that connection with her. I always notice other lefties and really like being one! Kinda funny, my grandparents had three grandchildren and two of them are left handed.

Your Paul is adorable!

My 4-1/2 year old is a lefty, started showing favoritism for his left hand when he was about 2-1/2.

DH and I are both natural lefties who were taught to write with our right hands.

I was wondering about DS too. He uses both a lot but seems to favor the left. Time will tell!

I have three boys and one of each. That's correct. Oldest had no true preference and now writes with his right hand but all sports are played left-handed. Middle could do nothing with his left hand and is still completely right-handed and cannot really adjust to using left at all. Youngest is exact opposite of middle. The younger two were set from a very young age. If you hand something to Paul and he uses that hand (left or right), he could go either way, but if you hand it to his right side and he transfers it or won't accept it in his right hand, you could be looking at a leftie. Honestly, we haven't noticed anything more difficult for our youngest, the leftie.

DD is a leftie, but she did not establish hand dominance until she was almost 6. She used both hands all through kindergarten & was falling behind the other kids in motor-skill development. She has always been small for her age, so we delayed her start into first grade. She finally ended up being a lefty.

When I was younger, I was a leftie, up until age 7. My mother told me lefties are children of the devil and that I would be gay if I were a leftie and made me switch.

I am now a rightie, I have the worst handwriting and it's bad and the same on both hands. If only I had stayed a leftie, what would have become of me, beautiful handwriting maybe?

I was made to write right handed too, and my handwriting is awful.

dh and i are righties.

all 4 sons are lefties...........now what are the odds on that........

they displayed their preference when they were about 4 years old.
that's when it was leftie for everything.

i had to have a friend that is a leftie show them how to tie their shoes.
one thing i was not able to teach them.

I am ambidextrous*, I can write with equal quality wth both hands, but I prefer to write with my left, and I have excellent penmanship in that hand.

My boss is a "reformed lefty," meaning he is a natural lefty, but was forced to learn to write with his right hand. He has the worst handwriting ever! People always bring me his notes, asking me to interpret his "heiroglyphics."

My doctor recently mentioned how helpful it is that in general prescriptions are being printed by the computer and then just signed off on by the doctor, as opposed to being completely handwritten. He said it has helped pharmacists fill the scripts properly--not needing to interpret the "chicken scratch" of penmanship-deprived/lefty-to-righty docs.

*cannot play sports left handed! Always throw balls right handed, but can switch hit in baseball. Red Sox, my number is...

edit to say switch!

My son is 4, has favored his left since I can remember, and now writes left handed, so I think it's going to stick.

My oldest DD is a lefty. I think she started to show preference for using her left hand around the age of two. She was in Occupational Therapy at the time and I remember the therapist saying it would be a few more years until children show hand dominance.

I am a lefty too, so it did not surprise me that she is. I remember when I was little they tried to make me a "righty" but it did not work. I have terrible handwriting now. Thankfully, they don't try to switch you anymore and my daughter has great handwriting. Heck, it is a million times better than mine! :teeth:

Both of my boys are lefties, and showed the preference well before two years of age.

DH is a righty. I am a lefty, but I do just about everything with both hands except write. Sometimes you have to adapt to the tools you're given.

My DH hates that he's going to have a hard time teaching them guitar.

DS is a lefty. He started at a young age using it, but still used his right hand also. The difference I noticed was how he used each hand. When he picked up a crayon he fisted it with the right hand, but held it like a pencil with his left. This was before he was 2 that I noticed the left tendencies.
The funny thing with him is that he seemed to be better playing baseball right handed when he was in t-ball. The next year he did better left handed. The next year he switched to batting left handed, but catching and throwing right handed. I always make sure to let his coach know about this because it always makes them scratch their heads when they see him doing one, then the other.
I don't try to make him use his right hand except for one thing. I taught him to use the mouse with his right hand. I know you can change the mouse for a lefty, but I knew it would drive everyone crazy each time someone went to use the comuter. He does very well using his right hand on the mouse. My sister loves having another lefty in the family.
