I have 2 daughters that will be turning 6 and 8 in Dec and love HSM.
Has anyone done a HSM b-day party and what did you do? I know you all have great ideas and would love some help. The party would have to be inside but we have a finished basement rec room we will be able to use.
I would like to do a joint party, since we will also be going to WDW in Dec that month is going to be a little crazy.
Any ideas are welcomed. Thanks for any and all help.

I made a cake for a relative with a HS musical theme that was not too hard (I did some of the work ahead of time on the fondant pages, ruler, pencil & eraser) & ordering the edible image). I didn't go to the party though, so no advise on activities and such.

If you want instructions on the cake or the info on the image I bought from ebay, please let me know.

Very cute cake. Unfortunately I am not a cake decorator. I can barely ice a cake without getting cake crumbs in the frosting. I can sew and scrap but decorate cakes I can not.

My dd is turning 6 in Dec and she wants a HSM b-day party as well. Here are some ideas I have come up w/ so far:

Invitations: I am going to make Backstage Passes - on the back it is going to say "GO WILD CATS! You have been choosen to attend (child's name) HIGH SCHOOOL MUSICAL PARTY! Auditions will be held at [your address] on [date] begining at [ ]. Sign up by [RSVP] by calling [your number]. Dress like a Wildcat! [Red & White]. I will laminate them, punch a hole and use string or yarn to make a necklace. We are borrowing a friends "red carpet" that she used for her daughter's birthday party.

Decorations:
We are doing everything in red & white. Signs like they have in HS on game day - Go Wildcats! Wildcats Rule! etc. I am doing centerpieces (2) made out of fun foam cut into megaphone shapes and writing "Go Cats" on it, then glueing that to a stick and putting into a red tissue paper covered floral foam circle. We also have a framed poster in our media room that I got at Walmart of HSM and we will bring that out for decoration as well. Red & white balloons & streamers.

Food/Cake: For cake, I always buy the character plates so I will get those but for food plates, I am just using red plates, cups, etc. I will probably buy some character napkins and mix them in w/ red or white napkins. Our Walmart has HSM cakes so I will just have them make the cake - they do a great job, the cake is very affordable and tastes great. I am naming all of the food after HSM/HSM 2 songs - ie "Bop to the Top" Nuggets, "We're All in This Together" Fruit Salad, "Fabulous" Dip, etc.

Activities: We live in TX so it is typically warm enough to be outside and we usually have a moonwalk - I will get the one w/ a basketball hoop on it so that they can play that as well. I usually try to have 1 or 2 crafts - I think we will probably make sport pennants out of fun foam and maybe friendship bracelets. I am also borrowing a karoake machine from our niece so that they can sing along.

Games: We don't usually do organized games but here are some suggestions -Find the Cell Phones. Mrs Darbus has taken everyone's cell phone and hidden it. Have a treasure hunt to find them.
Who Said It
Before the party, write down several lines from the movie with the character that said it, on slips of paper. The players take turns selecting a slip of paper form a basket. Then, they'll say the quote aloud and see who can guess the character from the movie that belongs to that quote.

Goody Bags
Here is where I always blow my budget! So this year, I am making some homemade cookies - either chocolate chip or sugar cookies decorated like basketballs - putting them in cheapo clear bags w/ a label on them that says "Zeke's Fresh Baked Cookies! Thanks for coming to my 6th birthday party! [child's name]" They will also have their crafts to take home.

My dd is turning 6 in Dec and she wants a HSM b-day party as well. Here are some ideas I have come up w/ so far:

.

These are great ideas. I will definitely use some of these. I have the HSM sing a long version on DVR so I may do a sing a long with that one.

A friend of mine did a drive in theme for her 16th birthday. Her parents used a projector and played a movie using the side of the garage as the screen. the projector they used hooked up to their laptop.

DD7 had a HSM theme for her birthday in February.

Target had a HSM cake.

I bought HSM plates, etc. from birthdayexpress.com.

Decorations were from party city - just red and black and some musical themed things.

I bought a megaphone craft kit from orientaltrading.com. It was one of those foam ones, and it was peel and stick. I also considered decorating tees with HSM colors, themes, etc. as an activity, but I was afraid of the mess.

For a goody "gift" (I didn't do bags), I sent them home with an echo microphone, also from orientaltrading.com.

For an activity, they did kareoke. A neighbor had a machine that we borrowed. It just plugged into the tv, and they said that they can use it just as a dvd player. More people than you would think (or maybe than I would think!) seem to have one, so maybe you know someone that does. I bought the HSM kareoke CD.

As you can see, I don't like to spend a lot of money on birthday parties. It was inexpensive. The only thing that I might have done differently was include a few activities/games. They did the kareoke for a while, but it didn't last as long as it needed to!

Enjoy the theming most when we keep it simple. They just can't take in enough of it all and watch the movie to make elaborate effort worth it to me.

My daughter (9) just had her HSM birthday party. We showed the movie. in a 2.5 hour party.

We had the party (movie room) which I made the rule for "no food." (This worked out really well!)

Then we had a food room. We had an intermission for this! Served cake, ice cream, wrapped packages of candy, and pop corn. Bottled Water to drink. (even though we didn't serve "real" food by limiting where they could eat, I think we avoided some tummy troubles.) While they ate, I asked trivia questions about the movie. They really LOVED this. I got the questions form the DVD board game. We gave out a sticker to someone who answered a question correctly.

We decorated with red a white streamer paper. The kids did most of it and it looked GREAT. It added color and was really cheap.

I did "Morning at the Movie" invitations because my daughter had not decided on what movie to show. We printed postcards on our own computer.

The only thing I spent significiant money on was the cake ($30) and T-shirts as the party favor.

I bought shirts from JiffyShirts. com and they were delivered to my door. I used avery white transfer paper through my own printer. And a WONDERFUL designer named AMY on the Creative DISigns group (here on DIS) created a High School Musical Design she customized with each girl's name. She didn't ask for anything in return (but I think a 'donation' to her by website (paypal) is customary.)

I did not work to get a good deal on the transfers because I planned the HSM theme in 1 week. Wish I had time to get some off ebay or somewhere else.

But, I think making T-shirts ran only .50 more than putting together goodie bags with school supply stuff in it.

My DD wanted to hand out T-shirts as girls arrived. Some girls changed into them. Some kept them for later. But we passed nothing out at the door. Several girls have already worn their shirts to school! They love them! I think in the end these cost about $3.50 a shirt. (But the T-shirts themselves were only about $2 including shipping.) I'm adding in the "donation" to the disigner, printer cartriges, and the transfer paper.

Making the t-shirts was easy. I pre-washed and dried. Ironed. Printed out the desings on the transfer paper using the directions. Cut the designs out. Ironing-ON took about 1 minute for shirt. Alll in all, I probaby spent 2 hours on them. (I KNOW I've spent that much doing-up goodie bags before.)

Another idea we had, but did not implement, was to make Autograph books for each girl as a party arrival activity. (get each other's siggy.) I also think Pillowcases are cute for a spend-the-night. Before we decided on t-shirts, I considered Lanyards to give each girl as she arrived. (But one customized thing was enough on my budget!)

I just totaled everything up and I spend $150 on the party. More than I originally intended by $25...but my daughter loved the shirts and we had !17 girls!

I cannot figure out how to show you the t-shirt design here. Check out the Creative Disigns board. There is a HSM thread.

I think the t-shirt idea as a goodie bag is a great idea. I will have to go check out the DISigns boards.
Thanks everyone for your great ideas.
Their birthdays just always seem to pop up on me and I drive myself crazy trying to do 2 different parties. I'm glad they are willing to do them together and like the same things.

My DD8 just had her HSM party. Our local budget theater charges 5.50/guest to watch a movie and it includes popcorn and a soda. The theater is only for the party, so girls can dance and sing all they want. We had HSM2 on DVD and played that. We stopped half way through for a break, pizza and presents. I did not decorating. I purchased folders, pencils, tattoos, stickers and inflatable microphones for the "goody bags". We also burned CD's of the soundtrack for each girl.

I was wondering if you could possibly tell me where you found the kit to make the HSM cake on e-bay. I know this post is old but I was wondering if you could still tell me.

Hi HDRKDR - did you mean my cake? If so, the only part I bought on ebay was the edible image on the right hand side. I just searched "edible cake photo high shcool musical" (or something along those lines!). For the rest of the cake, I made all the pieces (pages, eraser, pencil, rulers, etc) myself.

I would love to get the instructions for this cake!
It won't let me post my email b/c I'm new to this site. How do I get a hold of you?
Thanks in advance!

Awesome ideas!!!

Wish I had a party like this, I looooove hsm<3

Speaking about HSM, I recieved a cap & tassel that was used in the HSM3 movie today (won it from jostens.com, the site that made the graduation stuff for the movie)!

Wii has a really fun HSM Kareoke game. You need a microphone. I'm sure if you don't have Wii and the mike that a friend or family member will have one and you may be able to rent the game.

My DD had a hard time getting the microphone back from me once I started playing at a relatives over Christmas. "I want faaaaaaabulous!" :lmao:

Since this thread has been revived I will throw a couple of otehr ideas out that worked well for us.
Google theatre games and find some good for the ages you will have and your group size. We played several of "Mrs. Jarvis' Theatre Games" and that went over really well.
By request of the birthday child who is nota cake eater we had Creme Brulee for dessert. I did have brownies availabel as well because I knew many kids waould not eat it. They all wanted to try the fancy dessert from the movie though and a lot more ate it than I was expecting.
