Anyone have experience with using DCL travel insurance to cancel?

We are about 25 days from our San Juan cruise and I have run into a snag in my treatment of Crohn's disease. Right now I am on TPN which means I can't eat and have to be fed by IV. IF I have to continue to do this up to Cruise time I won't be able to cruise because I can't get the feeding bags in SanJuan and bring on ship, never mind that I simply won't want to cruise without being able to eat.

SO We have the DCL insurance on the reservation. Can anyone tell me what the process is to cancel the cruise and use the insurance? I'm pretty sure the DCL insurance doesn't include pre existing conditions which obviously I have since I have been diagnosed with Crohns for 20 years. So I assume the insurance will deny but then what happens? Does DCL give us a credit for 75%? Did I understand that correctly? Can you simply cancel for any reason and get the 75% credit?

I don't want to call DCL just yet because we are reevaluating on Jan 18th with Doc. Any advice or experience in how this will proceed should I decide I need to (or desire to) cancel?
Thanks for any information!

So sorry you're dealing with that, especially at this time! You'll need to contact the insurance. I forget who the DCL carrier is right now, but you should have received the contact info. The insurance company will let you know what you need to do to file a claim -- most likely something from your doctor indicating inability to travel. And you are correct that the DCL-offered insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions; whether your situation is considered pre-existing may depend how stable you were in the weeks/months leading up to your initial reservation. After the insurance carrier denies your claim, contact DCL about the credit. I believe it is 75% of the cruise fare and the new cruise must take place within 12 months of the canceled cruise. But they can provide those details when you file.

Good luck with recovery!

Oh thank you so much for your response. I do think I got the information on the insurance company from Disney so Ill check into that. I didn't realize I would have to use the credit within 12 months so I will have to check on that too. Thanks also for your kind wishes. It is really hard since we booked this San Juan cruise the day it came out and got great pricing and its not a common itinerary DCL does. :(

I dont have anymore info for you but I just wanted to chime in that I hope you get some relief soon - my stepdad has Crohn's and I know how difficult it can be! Hugs!

Hopefully you can make this cruise or they will offer another southern itinerary for you within 12 months if you can go!

Yes, you should confirm the details. I'm certain there is a time limit to use the credit, and I think it's 12 months. But that could have changed or I may be remembering incorrectly. Please update us if it's any different.

Awww Thank you so much. It is a really crappy disease :) Thanks for the hugs! As much as I want to go, going while in a flare is a bad idea. Hope your stepdad is doing ok. It can be ok in times of remission!

Seconding what Judy said about the definition of a pre-existing condition. I don't think it's as drastic as you might think. But check.

And maybe in the future be sure to get insurance from an outside agency that does cover such things, just in case.

Hope you get through this quickly.

We have gone thru Disney insurance co. Anon is the name of it I am pretty sure.
Yes, file a claim by contacting the insurance co. I got the number from Disney.
Insurance co will fax, email snail mail the claims form. They may deny the claim due to pre existing condition and give you 75% of it as a future cruise credit that must be used within 12 months of the date on cancelled cruise.
My sister has Crohns... I wish you comfort as you go thru your treatments.
Best wishes.

Just to give you a little hope that they will offer the southern cruise again. Looking at 2017 dates already released they have a repositioning cruise (3 or 4 days I think) from San Juan to Port Canaveral listed. Fingers crossed they do.

And hope you get to feeling better soon.

Transamerica Casualty Insurance Company is the insurance carrier. Aon Affinity is the broker. Policy PDF below.

Good to know. I got our forms and the credit from Aon so I guess they contacted Transamerica and got the credit from them. All told it was a quick process of about 3 weeks.

Oh no! How heartbreaking to have to cancel and for a not fun reason. I hope everything works out for you.

I do second what another poster said about looking at non-DCL trip insurance policies in the future. There are sites you can use to comparison shop. I don't bother and buy the classic plan with Allianz. Mom has a predicting condition so I make sure to buy within 14 days of initial booking and payment to insure coverage if her condition is reason for cancelling.

Very sorry to hear that....

We just went through this process. I knew going in that our situation would not be covered (surprise adoption... long, but great story). First you have to cancel your trip through your agency or DCL, then you submit you claim. I called to start a claim, they email you some forms, you send them back. A few weeks later you will get a letter telling if you you claim was accepted or denied (75% credit). It was all pretty easy.

I'm not sure what happens if you claim is accepted, but if it's denied, you only get DCL credit and it must be used with in 1 year.

I'm so appreciative of all the responses and good wishes everyone! Still holding out hope the Doctor will let me come off the TPN and try some food next week and see where were at. We decided we would hold off on cancelling until closer to the cruise. Its still a bit risky if my Crohns hasn't calmed down by then and I know I won't want to be on the cruise anyways. Otherwise we have confirmed that we will at least get a 75% credit from DCL to use within a year. They have a 5 night from San Juan to Miami in November we might have to switch to but I'm feeling a little bit better about having to cancel if we do.

Only other question I have is if the forms they send you have to go to your doctor? Anyone have a pdf of the type of forms or questions they give you?

Thanks again for all the well wishes. I'm grabbing on to them like Pixie Dust in hopes we can make our magical journey on the Wonder!

I'm not sure how to send you the forms but there is one page that must be filled out by your Dr. It looks pretty straight forward and they do provide it.
